Overview
When All-American defensive end David Pollack graduated after the 2004 season, the Bulldogs' coaching staff was comforted by the fact that the Cincinnati Bengals' first-round pick had helped groom his successor. Two years later, Moses had developed into one of the elite pass rushers in the collegiate ranks. While Moses did not produce the sack figures during his senior year like he did the previous season, it was due mostly to the constant double-team coverage he faced.
With offenses gearing to shut down Moses, it allowed someone else on the defense to emerge, and fellow defensive end Charles Johnson was the beneficiary of opponents trying to contain Moses. The defensive end tandem would combine for 14 sacks, 31 tackles behind the line of scrimmage and 62 pressures during the 2006 season.
Moses was a PrepStar All-Southeast Region selection at Cedar Shoals High School, adding Atlanta Journal -Constitution Top 50 honors. He was named to the Athens Banner-Herald All-Northeast Georgia team during his senior season as a defensive end.
The Georgia Sports Writers Association AAAA all-state honorable mention served as team captain and was named the team's best defensive lineman as a senior. He made 77 tackles, 12 sacks, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries that season. A standout basketball player, Moses was named to the Atlanta Tipoff Club's AAAA all-state team. He also scored 13 points in the Georgia Athletic Coaches' Association North-South All-Star game.
Moses enrolled at Georgia in 2002, but spent the season performing on the scout team. In 2003, Moses played on the Bulldogs' basketball team before joining the football team during spring drills. He played in all 14 games behind Robert Geathers at left defensive end that year. Despite not starting, the redshirt freshman posted 37 tackles (21 solos) with 2½ sacks, 4½ stops for losses and eight quarterback pressures.
The following season, Moses lined up behind Will Thompson at left end, appearing in 11 games. The Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll member came up with 23 tackles (16 solos), 6½ sacks and 7½ stops behind the line of scrimmage. He recovered a fumble and generated 17 pressures.
Moses shifted to right end after the departure of David Pollack. He earned third-team All-American and All-Southeastern Conference first-team honors, totaling 44 tackles (35 solos). He ranked second in the SEC and eighth in the nation with 11½ sacks and placed 14th nationally and second in the league with 20½ stops for losses. He paced the Bulldogs with 38 quarterback pressures, as he also deflected two passes, recovered two fumbles and caused another.
Even though he failed to come close to his 2005 performance, Moses earned Walter Camp All-American second-team honors in 2006. He started all year at right end, coming up with 33 tackles (21 solos), 4½ sacks and 12 stops behind the line of scrimmage. He recovered one fumble, deflected a pass and posted 32 pressures.
In 51 games at Georgia, Moses started 26 times. He recorded 137 tackles (93 solos) and finished fifth in school history with 25 quarterback sacks for minus-174 yards. He added 44½ stops for losses of 234 yards and collected 95 quarterback pressures. He recovered four fumbles, caused another and deflected three passes.
Analysis
Positives: Has a lean but athletic build with tapered upper body muscles, long arms and legs, split high, adequate bubble and a frame that can carry at least another 20 pounds of bulk to compete on the front wall … His quick-twitch moves and outstanding timed speed could be a better fit for outside linebacker at the pro level … Has the loose hips and lateral range to close on the ball in a hurry and make plays from sideline to sideline … Has the functional hand strength to shed vs. the single blocker, shoot the gaps and put consistent pressure on the pocket … Shows excellent knee bend, body control, balance and explosiveness out of his stance to instantly put pressure on the pocket from the backside … Jason Taylor-type (Miami Dolphins) with outstanding short-area speed and very effective on stunts, playing with his hand down wide to the open side to get after the quarterback quickly … Flexible athlete who keeps his feet on the move and can redirect without having to gather or take wasted steps … High-energy type who gives total effort on every play … Shows good read-and-react skills and is quick at recognizing blocking schemes … Won't get fooled by play-action or misdirection and has a good feel for the ball … Has enough hip snap and stride in his backpedal to cover tight ends and backs in short area coverage … His burst and long arms help him get a quick jump on a lethargic blocker and he keeps his hands active in attempts to shed (lacks strength to power through blocks, though) … Has an array of pass-rush moves and knows how to position his hands inside his frame to counter and slip off blocks, showing excellent recovery speed when he is ridden wide on the play … When he stays low in his pads and explodes off the ball, he is very effective at getting up field (light on his feet, doing a good job of sidestepping trash) … Lacks the bulk to bull rush, but has the functional strength to face up, play off blocks, break down and hit with pop on contact to take the ball carrier down … He knows he will struggle trying to face up to the bigger blockers, but compensates with his speed and quickness to catch the runner from behind … Won't overpower an opponent, but uses his long arms well to maintain block separation (better in pursuit than containment) … More productive on the move than when battling in the trenches, as he moves very well to contain the toss sweep and is quick to counter and change directions … Stays in control, going low in his stance and extending his arms properly to grab, contain and wrap before the tackle … Has enough balance to fight and make plays working in-line, but is much more effective in space, where he can generate enough power to deliver an explosive hit … Has a sharp drive coming off the edge as a pass rusher and uses his short-area speed to collapse the pocket and bring down the quarterback in the backfield … Has the ability to vary his burst on the pass rush and is very good at putting his hand down and charging off the edge … Doesn't have the raw power to frequently drive the blocker into the quarterback, but can close in an instant, wrapping and exploding through the pocket with his great forward burst of speed … While he can be a very good edge rusher in the "46" defense, his speed and lateral range, along with his light frame, could see him be more productive at the next level as a strong-side outside linebacker.
Negatives: Lacks overall bulk to prevent blockers from locking on and riding him wide … His slight frame causes the larger blockers to cover him up and push him around in traffic … Despite his quickness, he shows inconsistencies playing off the edge while in a three-point stance, feeling more comfortable standing upright (gets better explosion standing up and his base doesn't get as narrow as it does when he puts his hand down) … If he exposes his chest, blockers can lock on and push him out of the rush lane … Is active with his hands, but fails to throw them with force, causing him to get neutralized vs. the double team … When linemen are able to make reach blocks, Moses will struggle to shed … Needs to improve his stamina, as he will get lethargic late in the game … Relies mostly on his burst on the pass rush and needs to use his rip and club moves with better consistency.
Compares To: Jason Taylor, Miami Dolphins … Taylor is certainly in a league by himself, but like Taylor, Moses is much more productive making plays on the move rather than battling in-line … He lacks the sand in his pants to stack blocks or split double teams, but possesses the outstanding burst and lateral range to slip blocks and pressure the pocket from the backside … Playing him in a stand-up position, where he can loop, angle and slant to the pocket might be a better fit for this talented, but lean athlete.
Agility Tests
Campus: 4.72 in the 40-yard dash … 345-pound bench press … 33-inch vertical jump … 33½-inch arm length … 9½2-inch hands … Wears glasses.
