The following analysis was provided by GM Jr Scouting LLC.

SUMMARY

Phillip was a very enjoyable player to grade because he consistently finds a way to eliminate his man from the play through his all-out effort and tremendous effort on every play. Despite being shorter and lighter than the average NFL center, his blocking technique and strength enable him to play strong at the point of attack vs. bull rushers. Much of Phillip's success can be attributed to his instincts and smarts -- he does a good job of identifying the defense, communicating with the other linemen to switch off well vs. defensive line stunts/loops and can adjust to delayed blitzes well. He does a good job of getting out of his stance and onto the defensive tackle quickly, keeps his feet running and can tie his man up to keep him from disrupting the play. Overall, Phillip is the type of offensive lineman who often gets overlooked because he is undersized and not a good athlete. But when it comes to intangibles and production he is definitely more than good enough. Phillip is probably going to be drafted later than he's rated -- if he is drafted at all -- but in a season or two he will bulk up to 310 pounds and will be a solid starting center in the NFL. He will never be a top center, but will be good enough to win with.

STRONG POINTS

Phillip is a highly competitive, smart and instinctive center who does a very good job of getting set to block quickly and finds a way to keep his man from impacting/disrupting the play. He has the flexibility to bend his knees, sink hips and pass block with a wide base -- he can stand up power rushers in their tracks. He does a good job of driving defensive tackles down the line of scrimmage on down/side blocks and is surprisingly effective making reach blocks. He does not get his body around and into good position, but makes contact, keeps his feet running and maintains enough contact to tie his man up.

WEAKNESSES

Phillip is an undersized center who lacks the good athletic ability to make up for it. He does not have the power to drive his man off the ball on straight ahead run blocks. His lack of athleticism and foot quickness hinder his ability to get through the line of scrimmage to the second level quick enough and he cannot adjust to block a moving target well. He lacks the playing speed to pull and lead block on outside runs. His lack of size and athleticism also hinder his ability to cut off the explosive gap-shooting defensive tackle.

POSITIONAL FACTORS
GradeCategoryComments/Description
5.0Foot AgilityAdequate agility to move well in small areas, but struggles changing directions out in space.
6.0Initial QuicknessNot explosive off the ball, but does get off the ball and set to block quick enough.
5.5Play StrengthGood playing strength in pass protection, but lacks the strength to drive defensive tackles off the ball on straight-ahead run blocks
5.5Run Block In-LineDoes not drive his man out of play, but gets on him quickly, keeps his legs churning and can tie his man up long enough.
4.5Run Block SpaceStruggles to get through the line of scrimmage quick enough and cannot adjust quickly in space to a moving target.
6.0Pass ProtectionHe sets up quickly with a wide base and gets his hands on a defensive tackle quickly to stack his man up at the point of attack.
6.0Quick Set-Pass ProtectionHe sets up quickly and does a good job of getting his hands into a defensive tackle's chest quickly and stops his man in his tracks.
5.0Shuffle & SlideAdequate moving his feet in small areas, but struggles moving and adjust fast and out in space.
6.0Punch/Hand-UseHis punch is not very hard, but he does get his hands inside a defensive tackle's shoulders and can stop his man on the line of scrimmage.
6.0Vs. Power RushDespite lacking size, he does a good job, but will need to bulk up to maintain success in the NFL.
5.5Vs. Speed RushDoes decently when he gets hands on the defensive tackle fast, but struggles vs. explosive gap-shooting defensive tackles.
6.0ErrorsHe does not make mental errors -- only mistakes are due to a lack of athleticism.

ATHLETIC ABILITYSection Grade: 5.0

Phillip is a limited athlete for a center, but all his intangibles have enabled him to be a consistently productive center at California. He has the natural flexibility to bend his knees, blocks with leverage and a good, wide base --his ability to block with leverage helps him to play strong at point of attack vs. power rushers. He has quick enough feet to get out of his stance and set to block quickly, but lacks the quickness to get through the line of scrimmage to block effectively on the second level and cannot pull and lead block on outside runs. Because he plays with a good, wide base, he can slide and adjust well in a small areas, but he lacks the agility to adjust and block well in space. Despite being a limited athlete, his flexibility and coordination help him to play over his feet and stay under control.

COMPETITIVENESSSection Grade: 6.0

Phillip is a very tough player and he showed it coming back into the UCLA game for the entire second half after being injured in the first quarter and needing help getting off the field. His all-out effort, competitiveness and playing strength help him to consistently eliminate his man on the most important plays, despite not having the ideal athleticism. His overall production can basically be broken down into two areas. His production is good in small areas when he does not have to move his feet a lot, but he struggles when he is forced to move his feet and block out in space often. He is a very consistent player whose tremendous efforts help him to play to the limits of his ability on nearly every snap. He is definitely a team player and displays a true no-quit attitude on every snap -- he stays after blocks and keeps feet running from snap to whistle.

MENTAL ALERTNESSSection Grade: 6.0

Phillip is a smart center and it shows in his pass blocking technique -- he bends his knees to block with a wide base, gets his hands inside defensive tackle's shoulders and locks out to hold his man at line of scrimmage. His instincts help him to react quicker than you expect despite being a limited athlete. But when he has to move his feet a lot, he cannot consistently react quickly. His ability to maintain his focus/concentration enables him to consistently play up to the limits of his ability.

STRENGTH/EXPLOSIONSection Grade: 5.0

Phillip is clearly short for a center at barely over 6-foot-1 and while he is well built for his height, he lacks the size/strength that is ideal for an interior lineman. While he has been pretty durable at Cal and has shown toughness playing through pain, his lack of size and athleticism will hinder his ability to be a durable NFL player. He is not a naturally explosive player, which hinders his ability to fire off the ball and get movement on straight ahead run blocks. When he pass blocks, he does a good job of maintaining leverage and holding ground vs. power rushers. He has the strength to drive defensive tackles down the line of scrimmage on down/side blocks, but cannot get movement on straight ahead run blocks.
