Tim Shaw
Height: 6-1 | Weight: 236 | Position:OLB | College: Penn State

Overview

Shaw is a classic case of a blue chip prospect with a blue-collar work ethic. Ever since arriving at State College, he has provided stellar performances for the Nittany Lions, whether as a running back, on special teams, at right outside linebacker, inside linebacker or left defensive end.

Shaw lettered in football, basketball and track during his career at Clarenceville High School, earning 11 varsity letters. He was named the 2001 Michigan Gatorade Player of the Year, adding Associated Press All-State first-team honors. He was also chosen to the Detroit Free Press' All-West Michigan squad as a senior. He graduated with a 3.8 grade point average.

Shaw was a standout running back and linebacker for head coach Greg Hudkins. He led the team to a 47-6 record during his career, including a 12-1 mark as a junior and a 13-1 record his final campaign. Shaw exploded for 43 touchdowns and over 2,000 yards rushing as a senior, as he also amassed 95 tackles with four interceptions and 10 quarterback sacks. In track, Shaw won the state title in the 100-meter dash during his senior season.

Shaw enrolled at Penn State in 2002, where he saw action in 12 games as a tailback while also excelling on the special teams coverage units. He gained 59 yards on 14 carries (4.2 avg) and caught one pass for a 19-yard gain. Shaw also registered six tackles (3 solos). He was shifted to linebacker during 2002 spring drills, spending that season on the sidelines as a redshirt.

In 2004, Shaw was the recipient of the team's Jim O'Hora Award, given to the Lions' most improved defensive player. He took over middle linebacker duties, starting seven of the team's first eight games before a nagging ankle sprain would sideline him for two contests and relegate him to reserve duties in PSU's final two games. His value to the team came into play during his absence, as the opposition averaged 157.0 yards per game rushing without Shaw on the field, compared to an average of 113.4 yards in games that Shaw started. He still managed to register 51 tackles (29 solos) with an assisted sack, 1.5 stops behind the line of scrimmage and two quarterback pressures. He caused one fumble, deflected four passes and intercepted another. Thirty-five of his tackles were made in run support, as he delivered timely hits that stopped eight scoring drives on third-down plays and four more on fourth-down action.

Shaw made the Dean's List and picked up Big Ten Conference academic honors for the second straight year in 2005. He proved to be an invaluable part of the team's success, as he started the squad's first five games at right outside linebacker (third position change during his PSU career) and then shifted back to middle linebacker for the rest of the schedule. He ranked fourth on the team with 76 tackles (43), 4.5 sacks and 6.5 stops for losses. He added three pressures and caused two fumbles, setting up a pair of PSU scoring drives as a result of his turnovers. He also had two pass break-ups.

Called by Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis, "the Lions' most important player," Shaw was again on the move in 2006, as he shifted to left defensive end as a senior. Despite playing vs. 300-pound offensive linemen, the 237-pounder produced 28 tackles (16 solos) and four sacks, along with nine pressures and six pass deflections in the team's first two games.

In 42 games at Penn State (30 on defense), Shaw started 28 times. He has recorded 161 tackles (91 solos) with nine sacks for minus 50 yards, 12 stops for losses of 55 yards and 15 quarterback pressures. He caused three fumbles, batted away 12 passes and gained five yards on an interception return. He also registered 11 tackles on special teams. On offense, Shaw rushed 14 times for 59 yards (4.2 avg) and had a 19-yard reception.

Analysis

Positives: Has a compact, solid frame with good upper body development, broad shoulders, thick chest, good bubble, tapered thighs and thick hamstrings … Shows good straight-line quickness and the arm extension to shed blocks … Has excellent straight-line speed, showing suddenness in his initial move off the ball and gets to top speed quickly effective short area pass defender because of his foot speed to stay with most receivers through their routes … Not the type who will take poor angles in pursuit, showing the closing burst needed to neutralize the cutback lanes … Has lined up at middle linebacker, right outside linebacker and left defensive end and never complained about the moves, putting team success above personal accolades … Attacks the ball with good urgency due to his ability to quickly break down plays in front of him … Very quick coming off the snap, staying low in his pads while generating quick lateral movements to string the plays wide … Has the natural ability to anticipate the flow of the ball … Shows the hand strength to shed blocks quickly, doing a nice job of extending to keep blockers from attacking his body, but needs to do this with more consistency … Stays at a proper pad level to extend, wrap and secure as a tackler and consistently keeps his legs moving on contact, doing a nice job of driving the ball carrier back … Shows explosive acceleration when closing and has a natural flow in his backpedal … Has good strength to jolt and redirect tight ends in pass routes and plays bigger than his size indicates, demonstrating good physicality in his game … Demonstrates that ease of movement getting to the ball when working in space and the leg drive and strength to get the ball carrier on the ground instantly … Does a good job of coming downhill, using his hands to shed when working near the line of scrimmage, which allows him to fill the rush lane … Plays with good leverage taking on blocks coming off the edge … Has the speed and burst to head off ball carriers along the corners … His acceleration and power lets him get a strong push off the blocker … Needs to stay active with his hands to prevent getting absorbed working inside, but he gives good effort as a blitzer, especially when attacking from the back side, making him a better fit for inside linebacker.

Negatives: Has some stiffness in his hips that affects his lateral and change of direction agility, but is very combative in attempts to slip off blocks and string plays wide … Shaw is played out of position on the defensive line and might be a bit shorter than ideal for the outside linebacker position, but could be a nice fit at middle linebacker, as he compensates with good explosion coming off the ball and above average power behind his hits … Does not have the bulk to prevent from being engulfed by the larger offensive tackles when playing as a down lineman … Not used much in pass coverage and needs to show he has the ability to locate the ball when working in the deeper areas of the zone … Has more than enough functional strength to take on blocks and shed, but must be more alert to low blocks to protect his body from double teams … His change of direction skills might not let him cover large portions of the field, but he runs to the ball well and has the hand usage to slip off passive blocks.

Career Notes

In 30 games on defense, Shaw recorded 161 tackles (91 solos) … 121 of his tackles came vs. the run, including 47 hits that killed opposing scoring drives on third-down plays and nine others that came on fourth-down action … Fourteen of his tackles stopped the opponent for no gain and 18 came inside the red zone, including 14 during goal-line stands … His turnovers led to three Penn State touchdown drives and the savvy veteran has drawn the opposition into three penalties … Shaw is the only Nittany Lion to receive both the Frank Patrick Memorial "Total Commitment" Award as well as the Jim O'Hora Award (presented to the most improved defensive player).

2006 Game Analysis

Akron … Tim led a Lions' defense that held the Akron offense to just 225 total yards, as he registered two solo tackles with a pair of sacks for minus 15 yards, two pass break-ups and a quarterback pressure in his first career start at left defensive end … PSU defensive coordinator hailed Shaw's performance after the game, saying "We can do more things with that alignment, because of the versatility of a guy like Tim Shaw." … On his first statistic for the season, Shaw beat offensive tackle Chris Kemme off the edge to sack QB Luke Getsy for a 10-yard loss at the start of the second quarter … Tim killed Akron's next scoring drive when he batted down a third-and-8 pass attempt by Getsy at the line of scrimmage … On the Zips' next drive, Shaw again attacked Getsy, sacking the QB for a 5-yard loss on a third-and-6 play, thus stymieing three consecutive Akron drives … Not content with his second quarter dominance, Shaw killed another drive in the fourth quarter when he burst into the backfield and pressured Getsy out of the pocket. The Zips QB then threw a pass that was intercepted by Penn State's Nolan McCready at the Akron 39 for a 7-yard return … With Shaw leading the way, the defense allowed only 33 yards on 34 rushing attempts, as Tim held the Zips to minus 125 yards on two running plays to his side of the field … The Running Game-Akron was held to 33 yards on 34 carries, but was held to minus 15 yards on two running plays directed at Shaw … Head to Head Competition-OT#74-Chris Kemme (6:06-290).

Notre Dame … Notre Dame broke open the contest with 17 second quarter points and capitalized on Penn State mistakes ? scoring 17 points off three turnovers ? while rolling to a 41-17 victory in the 76th home opener since Notre Dame Stadium debuted in the final season of Rockne's celebrated career … Tim managed four tackles, as the Irish double and triple-teamed him all day … Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis called Shaw, "the most important player on the field when the Nittany Lions and the Fighting Irish have at it. Shaw is the most intriguing guy on their defense," Weis said during his weekly teleconference."Because of his versatility, they're almost using him like a defensive end, which gives them more flexibility. They don't usually line up in a 3-4 scheme," Weis noted. "They just happen to have 3-4 personnel. We knew Shaw was the guy we had to look out for. He's his team's wild card, as they line him up all over the field. He's the guy that allows them to go in and out of schemes with relative ease. For any opponent, he's a big concern." … Head coach Joe Paterno pointed out. "I want to keep him {Shaw} in the game, as opposed to putting in a younger guy there (up front) who has not played a lot of football, and yet try to get the same things done with a four-man rush and dropping that guy off on some of the zone blitzes." … All of Shaw's four tackles came in run support, as the Irish managed 110 yards on 36 carries, but only gained 10 yards on four runs at the PSU defensive end … One of those tackles was a bone-jarring stop midway through the second quarter that took down tailback Darius Walker for no gain at the PSU17 … In the second quarter, Shaw killed a scoring drive when he tackled Brady Quinn on a bootleg after the QB gained only 7 yards on a third-and-9 play … The Running Game-The Irish rushed 36 times for 110 yards, but ND head coach Charlie Weis kept his runners away from Shaw most of the day, as they managed only 10 yards on four carries vs. Tim … Head to Head Competition-OT#74-Sam Young (6:07-292).

Youngstown State … The Nittany Lions (2-1) were too big and fast for the Division I-AA Penguins most of the afternoon. Penn State had 568 yards of total offense, including 389 on the ground, and held Youngstown State to 184 total yards. Tim managed only three tackles, all against the run, but twice stopped Penguins running backs for no gain … At the start of the second quarter, Shaw teamed with linebacker Paul Posluszny to take down tailback Brandon Nicholson at the line of scrimmage on a run off right tackle … With 1:51 left in the first half, Tim dragged down Tom Zetts for no gain on an option run … YSU's Justin Reams fell a yard short of a first down on a second-and-4 run that netted 3 yards early in the third quarter when Shaw and Ed Johnson converged on the tailback before he could escape the onslaught … The Running Game-PSU held Youngstown State to 28 yards on 47 carries and the Penguins totaled only 3 yards on three attempts to Shaw's side of the field … Head to Head Competition-OT#66-Nhemie Theodore (6:03-293).

Ohio State … Shaw followed with two tackles and a pass deflection, but the nation's top-ranked Buckeyes rolled to a 28-6 win. PSU played parts of the game without their head coach, as Joe Paterno had to leave the sidelines several times due to a bout with the flu.

With eight minutes left in the first half, lingering flu symptoms forced Joe Paterno to find refuge in the locker room. "It was the first time I've left the field in 60 years of football, including high school," Paterno quipped. "But I've always said that if I can read the paper on Sunday after a loss, I don't need a doctor." … Shaw knocked down a Troy Smith second-and-11 pass intended for Dan Potokar midway through the second quarter … He collided with Antonio Pittman on a 1-yard run up the middle at the start of the fourth quarter, but one a relentless pressure that Shaw generated on the next play, Smith turned a broken play into six points. The mobile senior scrambled in the pocket, eluded Tim and threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Brian Robiskie that put the Buckeyes up 14-3 … Head to Head Competition-OT#74-Kirk Barton (6:07-325).

Northwestern … The PSU left defensive end matched his statistics from the previous week, as he posted two tackles, deflected a pass and registered a pressure. The Nittany Lions came out throwing early and often to produce a 33-7 triumph … Shaw killed a pair of scoring drives, as he dragged down QB Andrew Brewer on a third-and-6 run that netted only 3 yards in the first quarter and then stuffed Brewer at the line of scrimmage on a third-and-goal run in the second quarter … Shaw pressured Brewer out of the pocket, as the QB threw an incomplete pass to Terrell Jordan and later in that fourth quarter drive, Tim deflected another Brewer pass in the backfield … Head to Head Competition-OT#56-Ryan Keenan (6:04-290).

Minnesota … Tim made only two tackles in a 28-27 overtime road victory, stuffing tailback Amir Pinnix after a 1-yard run midway through the first quarter and then stopped Pinnix on a 5-yard scamper during the Gophers' next drive … Shaw was heaping praises on the team and his fellow linemate, Jay Alford after the game, stating, "I wanted to win this game," said Tim. "We might have a lot to learn, but we learned today that we've got a lot of heart. Jay was as good as he always is. He took advantage of the guys that were blocking him. He did what he does best. I knew he could do it. He had a big day. Our team still has a lot to learn and a lot of improvement. At the same time, we have a lot of heart so we will keep fighting and keep balanced and do what it takes to win. That is what we are all about. We felt like the score shouldn't have been that close. We felt like we let them back into the game. We have had things going well for the past couple weeks. I won't say this is a turning point for us." … Head to Head Competition-OT#78-Joe Ainslie (6:07-310).

Michigan … Despite facing an offensive tackle that outweighed him by more than sixty pounds, the scrappy Shaw was credited with six tackles (3 solos), a 2-yard sack, two pass deflections and four pressures. Behind by a touchdown and operating with third-string quarterback Paul Cianciolo because of game-ending injuries to both Anthony Morelli and Daryll Clark, the Nittany Lions drew strength from the second-largest crowd in Beaver Stadium history and made the best of a tough situation before falling, 17-10, to fourth-ranked Michigan … Tim did all that he could to wreak havoc on the Wolverines' backfield. He brought down tailback Mike Hart for no gain on a rushing attempt and then batted down a Chad Henne pass midway through the first quarter … He pressured Henne into throwing a third-and-6 incomplete pass to Steve Breaston on Michigan's next drive … Tim knocked a second-and-goal Henne pass before Breaston could get to it and did the same to Carson Butler on a third-and-goal toss by Henne, forcing the Wolverines to settle for a 23-yard field goal with 5:08 left in the first half … Shaw ripped past offensive tackle Reuben Riley on successive plays to pressure Henne on a pair of successive passes, including one to Carson Butler on a third-and-10 play, forcing Michigan to punt at the start of the third quarter … Later in the fourth quarter, Shaw continued to harass Henne, sacking the QB for a 2-yard loss on a third-and-8 play … Despite his excellent performance, Shaw sought no satisfaction in his personal success, saying after the game, "Defensively, we played alright, but not good enough. We had a few big plays, and a couple big drives. Mike Hart is a very tough running back. You can't bring him down with your arms. You have to bring him down with your whole body, and bring a few guys with you. He's really good. This was just a disappointing loss. On a personally level, it's my senior year. I wanted to get them for our team. It could have been a great win for us today, and that's why it hurts." … Head to Head Competition-OT#72-Reuben Riley (6:04-318).

Illinois … With PSU down 9-3 at halftime, Tim led a stellar second half defensive effort, collecting five tackles (4 solos) with a 6-yard sack and three pressures, leading the Nittany Lions to a 26-12 win for the Homecoming weekend crowd of 108,112 at Beaver Stadium.

Illinois outgained Penn State 358 yards to 184, but the Lions picked up the win with strong defense and outstanding special teams play … Shaw batted away an Isiah Williams pass intended for receiver Kyle Hudson during the Illini's game-opening drive and on their next series, he pressured Williams into throwing an incomplete pass … Williams was stuffed at the goal line on a second-and-goal run that netted only one yard at the start of the second quarter … With 0:41 left in the first half, Shaw broke through the line to sack Williams for a 6-yard loss on a third-and-5 play … In the third quarter, Shaw knocked Jeff Cumberland down and pressured Williams into throwing another incomoplete pass on a third-and-5 play, forcing the Illini to punt … With 6:30 left in the game, Tim killed another scoring drive when he pressured Williams and the QB threw a third-and-6 incomplete pass intended for Jacob Willlis, as Illinois was again forced to punt … Head to Head Competition-OT#76-Charles Myles (6:06-320).

Purdue … Battling 38 mile-per-hour wind gusts at Ross-Ade Stadium, the Nittany Lions used a total team effort to capture their sixth win and become bowl eligible. Tim made a pair of solo tackles and the Nittany Lion defense held the Boilermakers to 240 total yards, more than 200 yards below their season average in a 12-0 triumph … The win was Penn State's first shutout since blanking Northwestern 49-0 on Homecoming in 2002, a span of 49 games, and the first shutout on the road since 1993 against Iowa. The Lions have gone nine straight quarters without allowing a touchdown. "I thought [the defense] tackled great today," said coordinator Tom Bradley after the game. "It could have been our best tackling game of the season." … Shaw killed a second quarter drive when he brought down QB Curtis Painter on a third-and-6 run that netted only 3 yards, forcing Purdue to punt … Tim also stopped Jaycen Taylor on a 1-yard run during Purdue's next series … Head to Head Competition-OT#74-Sean Sester (6:08-309).

2005 Season

Academic All-Big Ten Conference selection and a member of the school's Dean's List after compiling a 3.75 grade point average … Proving to be the unsung hero of a defense that led the conference in pass efficiency defense (106.6 rating) and ranked second in scoring (17.0 ppg), total defense (304.7 ypg), rushing defense (93.0 ypg) and sacks (41) … Started every game, lining up at right outside linebacker for the first five contests before shifting to middle linebacker for the final seven clashes … Participated in 726 plays, recording a career-high 76 tackles (43 solos) with 4.5 sacks for minus 25 yards, 6.5 stops for losses of 29 yards and three quarterback pressures … Deflected two passes and caused a pair of fumbles … The defense allowed the opposition to gain 1,514 yards on 398 carries with twelve touchdowns, but opposing ball carriers managed only 155 yards on sixty attempts on plays directed at Shaw … 60 of his tackles came in run support, making 26 stops on third-down plays and five more on fourth-down action … Seven of his tackles came inside the red zone, including one on a goal-line stand … He also made seven tackles that stopped the opposition for no gain … Both of his turnovers set up Penn State touchdown drives … Tim added three tackles playing with the special teams coverage units and drew the opposition into three penalties (all holding).

2005 Game Analysis

South Florida … The Nittany Lions rolled to a 17-0 second quarter lead, racked up 354 total yards of offense, and notched outstanding performances from freshmen and returning lettermen alike on their way to a 23-13 opening day victory … Shaw tied his career-high with ten tackles (7 solos) and an assisted stop behind the line of scrimmage while lining up at right outside linebacker … On South Florida's opening possession, Shaw and linebacker Tyrell Sales forced a fumble that was scooped up by cornerback Alan Zemaitis and returned 16 yards for a quick touchdown and a 10-0 lead … Tim spoke with the media after the game, stating, "I think we played a heck of a lot today, amount-wise, and so that was something, but we also played well. I mean, we had something like nine three-and-outs." …

Asked about playing outside linebacker for the first time in his career, he responded, "It felt good, but there was a lot of mistakes that I need to correct. I felt pretty good, but I

come off the field and I think ?Man, what should I have done?' and we made corrections

during the game and there are still things that I didn't fix, but there is so much room for

improvement from me. Our defense takes pride in our work ethic every week. There were times when we let up runs at critical times, but we just continue to work on that. It's all play recognition and every man completing their assignment." … Shaw killed a scoring drive at the start of the second half when he tackled tailback Andre Hall at the line of scrimmage on a third-and-1 run … On USF's next drive, Tim again was the culprit to end it, as he again took down Hall after a 2-yard gain on a third-and-4 run … Later in the fourth quarter, Carlton Hill was dragged down for a 3-yard loss on an option play when Shaw and Josh Gaines converged on the runner in the backfield … The Running Game-USF's Andre Hall gained 74 yards on 21 tries, but managed only 11 yards on five attempts vs. Shaw … Tim gave up only 11 yards on the day vs. eight rushing attempts by South Florida in his area … Shaw registered eight of his tackles vs. the run, including two third-down stops and two hits that resulted in no gain.

Cincinnati … Shaw was in on another ten tackles (8 solos) with a 6-yard sack, two pass deflections and a pressure … One of his hits stopped Mike Daniels on a 9-yard punt returns … Midway through the second quarter, slipped past offensive tackle Steve Eastlake to sack QB Dustin Grutza for a 6-yard loss on a third-and-8 play … He killed another drive when Shaw deflected a third-and-8 pass thrown by Grutza midway through the third quarter … Later in that quarter, Tim chased down Brent Celek after the tight end broke free on a 24-yard reception to haul him down at midfield. On the next play, he tackled Grutza for no gain on a bootleg, repeating it again on the next play (third-and-10), when he leveled Grutza at the line of scrimmage … In the fourth quarter, Tim beat Eastlake again to pressure Grutza and the QB then threw a pass that was intercepted by safety Calvin Lowry at the PSU 29 on a fourth-and-7 play (Shaw tackled Celek on a third-and-15 pass from Grutza that netted 8 yards on the previous play) … The Running Game-Cincinnati was held to 31 yards on 34 carries, as Tim produced minus 2 yards on four rushing attempts directed at him.

Central Michigan … The Nittany Lions raced to a 3-0 record, defeating Central Michigan 40-3 on the strength of 519 yards of total offense - including 381 yards passing, and a defense that was led by Tim, who delivered ten tackles (8 solos) for the third consecutive game, adding two sacks for minus 9 yards and three stops for losses of 11 yards … "They are big, strong and tough," said Paterno of Central Michigan. Maybe so, but 6'4" fourth-year quarterback Kent Smith couldn't get real traction with Shaw and defensive end Tamba Hali chasing him around all afternoon. The defense made sure Penn State never looked back, holding the Chippewas to just 172 yards of total offense and a meager 14 yards rushing.

The rabbit drills paid big dividends in the way of eight sacks on the day, led by Tim's two sacks and three tackles for loss … Paterno was asked if he used Shaw to spy on the CMU quarterback and responded, "That is part of his responsibility on different coverages but not necessarily did we put him in as a spy. He did what he was supposed to do on the defenses. The kid is playing a lot of good football and he got a lot of pressure up front. Shaw did what we asked him to do and he is a good football player. He can run. He is a skilled athlete. But other than that, we didn't do anything particular to have him spy the quarterback." … The media then asked Tim about his sacks and to access his play, replying, "We knew we were going to have a tough game today, as Kent Smith is a great passer and can really throw the ball. So as a group we were prepared. My numbers can be deceiving. How ever many (sacks) I had, there were other things I didn't do right. The critical thing about playing linebacker, for me, it's a feel-of-the-game thing. A play will end and I'll think ?why did I go over there,' maybe I didn't see a guard or misread a play. I'm so critical of myself I want to be perfect on every play. I know it's not going to happen but that's what I'll keep striving for." … Early in the first quarter, Shaw killed a CMU drive when he tackled QB Kent Smith on a third-and-5 run that netted only 3 yards … Later in the first quarter, Tim chased down Justin Harper on an 8-yard pass thrown by Smith on a third-and-6 play … Shaw then dumped Smith for a 2-yard loss on a third-and-2 bootleg midway through the second quarter … On CMU's next drive, Tim sacked Smith for a 6-yard loss and two plays later on third-and-12, he again sacked Smith for minus 3 yards, forcing Central Michigan to punt … Tailback Ontario Sneed also had little success, as he took a third-and-2handoff from Smith, but gained only one yard before Shaw dragged the runner down with 2:57 left in the first half … At the start of the third quarter, Shaw again met Sneed on a third-and-22 run that resulted in only a 3-yard gain by the tailback … The Running Game-Central Michigan runners managed only 6 yards on nine rushing attempts directed at Shaw, as the linebacker made four third-down tackles.

Northwestern … "We all believed," said Penn State quarterback Michael Robinson after the come-from-behind 34-29 win over Northwestern. "We never doubted for a minute that we would win this game." … The win was a gift from Shaw, who collected eight tackles (4 solos), with seven hits vs. the run, including two on third-down plays that killed scoring drives and two more stops that came inside the red zone … Shaw stopped QB Brett Basanez for no gain on a third-and-3 bootleg, but PSU's Scott Paxson was penalized for jumping offside, negating the play late in the first quarter … The Running Game-The Wildcats amassed 198 yards with two touchdowns on 57 carries, but could gain only 20 yards on seven rushing attempts directed at Shaw, who had two-third down stops.

Minnesota … Shaw was in on six tackles (3 solos) with five stops vs. the run, including two third-down hits and two more on fourth-down action, helping the Lions improve to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the conference for the first time since starting the 1999 season 9-0. Penn State recaptured the Governors' Victory Bell with the 44-14 win and Joe Paterno improved to 348-116-3 overall and 5-4 all-time vs. Minnesota. Many Lion fans point to Minnesota's shocking last-minute win on Nov. 6, 1999 at Beaver Stadium as the beginning of the long downturn of Penn State's football fortunes. The defeat started a three-game losing streak and although Penn State rallied to shut out Texas AandM in the Alamo Bowl to end that season, a trend had begun. Since the upset loss to the Gophers in 1999, the Lions owned a record of 31-35 going into today's game. Consider that period officially over … On the Gophers' game-opening drive, Shaw crashed into tailback Laurence Maroney to take the runner down on a 1-yard gain … Later in the fourth quarter, Tim stopped Jakari Wallace just short of a first down when the receiver caught a third-and-8 pass from QB Bryan Cupito for a 7-yard gain … The Running Game-Minnesota totaled 113 yards with a touchdown on 32 carries, but only picked up 20 yards on seven attempts vs. Shaw.

Ohio State … In a battle between the Big Ten's only unbeaten teams, the Nittany Lions' defense held Ohio State's vaunted offense to just 230 yards, prevailing 17-10 in front of 109,839 rain-soaked fans, the stadium's second largest crowd ever. Tim shifted back to middle linebacker for the first time since the 2004 season, but managed only three assisted tackles, twice stopping fullback Brandon Schnittker on runs that netted one yard each … The Running Game-OSU gained 91 yards on 40 tries, but only 6 yards on three runs directed at Shaw … Head to Head Competition-OC#55-Nick Mangold (6:04-302).

Michigan … Tim was held to a season-low two tackles, but one came on a third-down play. PSU QB Michael Robinson engineered a fourth quarter comeback, as the Lions were down by three with three minutes to play, but Robinson put together a 13-play, 81-yard drive and scored on an 3-yard keeper with 0:53 left … Shaw killed a Wolverine drive midway through the third quarter when he tackled QB Chan Henne on a third-and-5 bootleg that netted only 3 yards, forcing Michigan to punt … The Running Game-Michigan tested Shaw only once on the ground, picking up 3 yards, but their ground game managed 160 more yards on 38 other carries vs. the rest of the PSU defense … Head to Head Competition-OC#57-Adam Kraus (6:06, 311).

Illinois … Shaw registered seven tackles, with six of those stops coming in run force, as he also caused a fumble to set up a PSU touchdown drive, assisted on a sack and made a stop behind the line of scrimmage. After the Illini posted three points on the opening drive, Penn State roared back with 63 unanswered points, much to the chagrin of an Illinois homecoming crowd of 52,633 … Tim started hitting the opponent coming out of the tunnel, as he chased down Illini tailback E.B. Halsey on a 7-yard catch during the game's first play from scrimmage … In the second quarter, Penn State's defense got into the scoring act.
