Analysis
Positives: Has good field instincts and showed improvement making plays on the ball in 2006 compared to past seasons Willing tackler in run support and won't shy away from contact Shows good strength when tackling and playing in press coverage Puts himself in position to make the play and uses his hands well to re-route the receiver Has the footwork and loose hips to compensate for a lack of timed speed Has a good feel for route progression Smart making keys and diagnosing the action when he steps up in the box in run support Shows a fluid change of direction Has a good feel for the receivers moves in the zone and gets a good jump on the ball coming out of his backpedal Has that soft touch in his hands to snatch the ball away from his body Has the leg drive and upper body power behind his tackles, striking and wrapping up securely Steps up forcefully to fill the lanes in run support, showing the leg drive to rock ball carriers back.
Negatives: Manages to stay tight with the receiver in deep routes, but lacks the timed speed to recovery when beaten Has good leaping ability, but fails to get to several throws as he fails to time his jumps Plays too deep in the zone and lacks the explosiveness to close on the ball while giving that big of a cushion Catches outside his frame, but will lose concentration, resulting in more deflections that interceptions Lacks the burst to close on plays in a hurry.
Compares To: RICKY MANNING-Chicago McBride lacks the speed needed to stay on the hip of a receiver in deep routes, but compensates with keen field instincts and with his knack for generally being in position to make the play. He is a student of the game whose instincts and ability to read and react quickly are definite assets. He is very willing to support vs. the run. Like Manning, McBride might not have the athletic intangibles to be a quality starter, but has enough intelligence and skills to be a nice fit in a sub package.
