Overview

A three-year starter at right cornerback, McBride would close out his career starting each of his final 34 games. He developed into a quality coverage defender and also excelled on the punt coverage unit.

At Clarksdale High School, McBride was selected to Prep Star's All-America and Top 300 squads. He added All-Southeast Region honors from Prep Football Report and Super Prep All-Dixie accolades. He was a first-team all-state choice by the Clarion-Ledger and a member of their 2002 "Ten Most Wanted" list, Dandy Dozen, and Top 40 team.

McBride added second-team all-state honors as a junior and earned all-region and Clarksdale Press Register 2002 co-Player of the Year honors. He played in the 2003 Alabama/Mississippi All-Star Game and earned team Offensive Most Valuable Player honors during his junior and senior years.

During his senior season, McBride rushed for 907 yards on 90 carries with 20 touchdowns and also had 16 pass receptions for another 268 yards and three scores. He also returned two punts for touchdowns. As a junior in 2001, he scored 15 times, as he rushed for 796 yards and caught 21 passes for 453 yards and six touchdowns, plus had 40 tackles, 10 pass break-ups, and five pass interceptions on defense.

McBride closed out his prep career with 1,703 yards rushing on 158 carries with 30 touchdowns, 36 pass receptions for 605 yards and seven scores, and 857 return yards and three touchdowns. He also recorded 63 tackles and seven pass interceptions.

In 2003, McBride played in 13 games as a reserve cornerback for Mississippi. He made six tackles (4 solos) and deflected two passes. He took over right cornerback chores in 2004, as he totaled 36 tackles (29 solos) with a stop for a loss. He also intercepted three passes, returning one for a 48-yard touchdown and batted away 16 others.

As a junior, McBride started all 11 games at right cornerback. He was in on 34 tackles (23 solos) with two stops behind the line of scrimmage. He knocked away eight passes and picked off another. In 2006, he registered a career-high 48 tackles (37 solos) with two stops for losses. He also blocked a kick and had nine pass break-ups.

In 47 games at Mississippi, McBride started 34 contests. He recorded 124 tackles (93 solos) with five stops for losses of 18 yards. He blocked a kick, deflected 35 passes and had four interceptions for 101 yards in returns, including a touchdown.

Analysis

Positives: Has good field instincts and showed improvement making plays on the ball in 2006 compared to past seasons … Willing tackler in run support and won't shy away from contact … Shows good strength when tackling and playing in press coverage … Puts himself in position to make the play and uses his hands well to re-route the receiver … Has the footwork and loose hips to compensate for a lack of timed speed … Has a good feel for route progression … Smart making keys and diagnosing the action when he steps up in the box in run support … Shows a fluid change of direction … Has a good feel for the receivers moves in the zone and gets a good jump on the ball coming out of his backpedal … Has that soft touch in his hands to snatch the ball away from his body … Has the leg drive and upper-body power behind his tackles, striking and wrapping up securely … Steps up forcefully to fill the lanes in run support, showing the leg drive to rock ball carriers back.

Negatives: Manages to stay tight with the receiver in deep routes, but lacks the timed speed to recover when beaten … Has good leaping ability, but fails to get to several throws as he fails to time his jumps … Plays too deep in the zone and lacks the explosiveness to close on the ball while giving that big of a cushion … Catches outside his frame, but will lose concentration, resulting in more deflections that interceptions … Lacks the burst to close on plays in a hurry.

Compares To: Ricky Manning, Chicago -- McBride lacks the speed needed to stay on the hip of a receiver in deep routes, but compensates with keen field instincts and with his knack for generally being in position to make the play … He is a student of the game whose instincts and ability to read and react quickly are definite assets … He is very willing to support vs. the run … Like Manning, McBride might not have the athletic intangibles to be a quality starter, but has enough intelligence and skills to be a nice fit in a sub package.
