Overview

Whether playing either tackle position, Levitre was a beacon for the OSU offense, as his punishing hand punch left several of the Pac-10 Conference's elite defensive linemen with no choice but to avoid getting into a battle in the trenches with the Beavers captain. The anchor of the team's front wall started 39 games during his career, including his final 35 contests (16 at left tackle, 23 at right tackle).

Levitre is the second of Sheri and Gene Levitre's sons to star as a collegiate offensive lineman, as his brother, Erick, was an offensive center at the University of Arizona (2002-06). In addition to garnering All-Pac-10 Conference and All-America honors, Andy has been honored by the school and league for his academic excellence. Having graduated with degrees in Finance and Sociology, he played last season as a graduate student.

At San Lorenzo Valley High School, Levitre earned first-team All-CIF, All-Santa Cruz Coast League and San Jose Mercury News All-Region accolades following his senior year. The team captain and co-MVP started as an offensive tackle and defensive lineman, leading the team to a 13-0 record and the Central Coast Section title in his junior season. That year, he was named honorable mention All-State and first-team All-Conference on offense and second-team All-Conference on defense. He also earned two letters in track, throwing the shot put.

Levitre enrolled at Oregon State in 2004, redshirting that season while competing on the scout team. He also spent that season shedding 30 pounds from his 340-pound frame. He earned Academic All-Pac-10 honors while seeing action in 11 games as a reserve at both offensive guard positions. In the season finale, he earned his first career starting assignment vs. Oregon, lining up at right offensive tackle.

Levitre played behind Josh Linehan at right tackle to begin the 2006 campaign, but when Linehan suffered a knee injury in the third game of the season vs. Idaho, Levitre took over those starting duties for the final 10 contests. He collected 66 knockdowns as OSU ranked fourth in the Pac-10 in scoring (27.79 ppg) and passing offense (242.36 ypg). Levitre earned second-team All-Pac-10 honors (also second-team on the academic list).

As a junior, Levitre was again selected to the All-Pac-10 Conference second-team and the league's gridiron academic squad. He started the first nine games at right tackle before shifting to the left side for the final four contests. He delivered 82 knockdowns and nine touchdown-resulting blocks, helping the Beavers rank fourth in the conference in rushing, averaging 174.92 yards per game on the ground.

In 2008, Levitre started all 13 games at left tackle. The All-American and All-Pac-10 Conference first-team choice registered a career-high 91 knockdowns and 14 touchdown-resulting blocks. He missed some playing time in the season opener vs. Stanford with leg cramps, but led the way as the Beavers averaged 360.57 yards per game in total offense.

Scouting Report

GENERAL REPORT: GRADE: 6.42

Body Structure: Levitre's frame is too short to play tackle, but he has a compact build and good muscle tone in his upper body (but has marginal arm length to play tackle). He has decent chest thickness, and big calves and ankles.

Athletic Ability: Levitre has a thick, but soft midsection and marginal initial quickness off the line. He lacks the ideal height and arm reach you look for in a tackle, another reason for a potential move inside to guard. He needs to put back the 20-plus pounds he shed prior to the Senior Bowl, as he appeared weaker at 306 pounds, resulting in quite a few lost battles in one-on-one challenges during the week of practices (has had battles with his weight in the past, arriving at 340 pounds at OSU as a freshman). Even with his soft midsection, he does an adequate job keeping his pads down working in the trenches (gets too tall and narrows his base on the move or playing in space). He has shorter-than-ideal arms for a blocker playing on the edge and lacks great height to play tackle at the NFL level, but displays one of the best hand punches in the 2009 guard class (needs to keep them inside his frame to dominate, though). From first eye contact, you can see he has that wide body frame you look for in a guard (ideal for zone blocking schemes). GRADE: 5.6

Football Sense: Levitre shows decent field awareness and does a good job of digesting a complicated playbook. He is generally an alert player with good vision and awareness, especially when locating stunts and blitzes. He knows all of the line's blocking assignments and is smart enough to make the calls, if needed. His grade would be even better here, if not for a rash of penalties, mostly false starts, as a senior. GRADE: 6.2

Character: Levitre is a personable character who is called by the coaching staff one of the team's most reliable players. He has no known off-field issues and is a self-starter who has no problems taking care of his business. He is a bit too conscientious and detail oriented, but you expect that from an offensive lineman (usually the most prepared player on the team). GRADE: 7.0

Competitiveness: Even with his strong hand punch, Levitre is more of a push-and-shove blocker than a mauler. He will finish his blocks, but needs to play with less emotion, as he lets a bad play linger, at times (see 2008 Utah and Oregon games). He works to finish, but wears his emotions on his sleeve. He does compete with intensity and always looks to finish his blocks. When he plays in control, he uses his hands effectively to control the pass rusher, utilizing his power to his advantage once he locks on. GRADE: 6.5

Work Habits: Levitre is a hard worker and a great character type. He is never late for offseason workouts and is a good self-starter. He has high self motivation and is never satisfied with his performances (his own worst critic). His work ethic is something the staff tried to get the younger players to emulate. GRADE: 6.8

ATHLETIC REPORT: GRADE: 6.18

Initial Quickness: Levitre does not generate a good initial step or come off the line with much explosion. This might be a possible liability in a potential move to guard, as he struggles to get out quickly and make plays in space. He needs to keep his feet underneath him better when working in space and is better served working in the short area, as he does struggle to locate and land on defenders. He must do a better job of rolling his hips coming out of his stance. He does not really get great movement off the snap, but does keep his feet shuffling once he engages a defender. He fails to generate much explosion coming off the snap, but shows the balance to stay with his blocks battling in the trenches. GRADE: 5.4

Lateral Movement: Levitre struggles playing out on an island, showing marginal lateral agility to mirror edge rushers and will be more suited blocking from an interior position. He needs to stay more square in his base, as his marginal foot movement is very noticeable when he has to slide and mirror. GRADE: 5.2

Balance/Stays On Feet: When he sinks his weight properly, Levitre displays enough balance and strong base to neutralize the bull rush. He gets too tall in his stance and even though he has a strong hand punch, he can be pushed back into the pocket when he fails to keep his hands inside his frame (also gets up on his heels when retreating, causing balance issues). He does not show great balance in his kick slide and has been known to cross his feet, resulting in him playing with a narrow base and leading him to look off-balanced (see 2008 Utah and Oregon games). When retreating in pass protection, he will also drop his head, losing sight of the defender before impact. GRADE: 5.7

Explosion/Pop: Levitre might lack good explosion in his initial step, but when he comes out of his stance with good urgency, he can get into his blocks with hands properly extended, legs wide in his base and his pad level low. If he gets a piece of his man, he is effective at gaining advantage on scoop and reach blocks. But, because of marginal hip snap and an inconsistent base, he does not gain leverage or much movement off the snap all the time. He has good lower body strength, but lumbers a lot coming off the snap, making him late in attempts to generate movement on drive blocks. Still, when he sinks his hips and keeps his pad level down, he shows better lower body strength to anchor at the point of attack (gets pushed back when he plays on his heels). He has the hand quickness to combat multiple moves by the defender, when he keeps them inside, and shows better balance and power to lock on and control (good grabber) when he keeps his base wide. Few guards can jolt a defender with their hands like Levitre can, but he needs to play in control for them to be effective. GRADE: 6.8

Run Blocking: Levitre lacks good timed speed and loose hips, but somehow manages to work his way down the line well to get position blocking against the inside rush. He works well in unison with his guards and shows much better force behind his initial surge when working in-line. He is a combative type in the trenches and when he keeps his hands inside his frame, he shows very good recoil agility. When he rolls his hips, he is adequate getting movement and taking advantage. He drives his feet on contact and uses his hands like dangerous weapons. GRADE: 7.0

Pass Blocking: Levitre hits the defender with good force in pass protection and he beats the bull rush when he plays flat-footed and keeps his feet under him. He has better field vision and awareness on pass plays, doing a nice job of locating blitzes and stunts. His lack of explosion moving out to the edge sees him have constant struggles vs. the speed rush (see 2008 Penn State, Utah and Oregon games). He also had problems handling the bull rush (failed to sink his pads) during Senior Bowl practices while lined up at right guard and will need patient coaching to help him develop a feel for playing a new position. GRADE: 6.1

Pulling/Trapping: Levitre slides adequately in trapping assignments, getting proper body position and balance (only effective on short area plays, though). He needs to take better angles in the second level and show better alertness in the open field, as he loses sight of defenders when on the move and needs to keep his head on a swivel. When stationed along the line, he shows good body control attacking the defender and playing off his blocks to stalk a secondary target (does not do this well playing in space). GRADE: 5.7

Adjust on Linebacker Downfield: Levitre sometimes looks lethargic and his feet tend to die when he has to run long distances on outside running plays (needs to show better angle concept). When working into the second level, he does not have the speed to neutralize second-level defenders and will try to compensate by overextending and lunging, but this is not a problem when working along the line. GRADE: 5.2

Use of Hands/Punch: When stationary at the point of attack, Levitre does an excellent job of using his hands to defeat counter moves. He is not really a naturally strong player, but has demonstrated an exceptional hand punch to shock and jolt the defender. He comes off the snap with his hands on the rise and is effective at locking on and walling off the defender. He hits with tremendous force in his punch and is good at clubbing the defender in the head or chop blocking to take the opponents off their feet. With his a thick chest and solid upper body strength, he does a good job of using his hands to get a piece of the defender's jersey in one-on-one stationary battles. He does rely too much on his powerful punch to shock and jolt, but when he is too slow getting his hands up or gets them outside his framework, defenders have good success getting a shoulder on him and slipping off his blocks. While he uses his hands well to stun, he gets reckless late in games and takes too many glancing blows (see 2008 Utah and Oregon games) and needs to do a better job when attempting to out-muscle defenders. GRADE: 8.3

Reactions/Awareness: Levitre is somewhat a meticulous sort who tends to overanalyze things and will let bad plays linger in his thoughts. He must do a better job of anticipating the snap, as he had a rash of false start penalties as a senior (see 2008 USC, Utah and UCLA games). When he spots twists and games, he gets into position and will fight until the whistle to stay on his blocks. GRADE: 6.4

Compares To: JOSH BEEKMAN, Chicago -- Like Beekman, Levitre will need to move to another position in the pros, as he lacks the quick feet, long arms, ideal size and good athleticism needed to play left tackle. He proved during his senior year that he struggles in one-on-one matchups vs. the speedy pass rush. He more likely will play guard at the next level, as he has the upper body strength to push the pile, but lacks the timed speed and balance to be consistent attacking second-level defenders. He does a very good job of driving the defender off the line, and could find a home as an interior blocker because of his low center of gravity and strong hands.

OVERALL GRADE: 6.22
