The Massachusetts state police has issued a citation to troubled linebacker
Spikes, who has since been released by the Patriots due to the incident, was charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury crash, operating a motor vehicle negligently to endanger, speeding and failure to stay within marked lanes. He is scheduled to report to Wrenthan District Court at a later date to answer to the charges.
His 2011 Mercedes-Benz Maybach allegedly crashed into the back of a 2009 Nissan Murano on an interstate highway in Foxborough on Sunday morning. Three passengers in the latter were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. They were treated and released.
The vehicle driven by Spikes was abandoned. He reported via OnStar that his car had been hit by a deer, but investigators found no deer upon their arrival on the scene.
Less than a month after signing linebacker
Early Sunday morning, Spikes' Mercedes Maybach was found on a highway near Foxborough with no driver present. Later, police responded to another vehicle saying they were rear-ended by a vehicle matching the Maybach, which was registered to Spikes. No charges have yet been filed in the incident.
Spikes played for the Patriots from 2010-13 and was with the Bills last season.
As expected, linebacker
Spikes visited with the team early this month. He spent four years with New England before being shipped to Buffalo, where he posted a career-low in tackles. A switch by the Bills to a 3-4 defense likely would have had Spikes as the odd man out.
The 27-year-old Spikes contributed to an average of 89 tackles in 2012 and 2013 combined with the Patriots, but managed just 54 with Buffalo a year ago.
After just one season out of New England, linebacker
Spikes' numbers took a hit in 2014 with the
"We're going to reach out to him and I'm going to call him when I get back," Whaley said. "Does it fit what we're offering and where he is in his career? We would love to have him back but again, it's got to be a fit on both parts."
Spikes played a part-time, run-stopping role last season for the Bills and if re-signed he would do the same in 2015.
The 27-year-old was a second-round selection by the Patriots in 2010. In his five years in the NFL he has tallied 340 total tackles, two sacks, 15 passes defensed, two interceptions and six forced fumbles.
