Report: LB Brandon Spikes officially back with Patriots
by Marty Gitlin |

As expected, linebacker Brandon Spikes is back with the Patriots, per NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, who is reporting that he has signed a one-year contract.

Spikes visited with the team early this month. He spent four years with New England before being shipped to Buffalo, where he posted a career-low in tackles. A switch by the Bills to a 3-4 defense likely would have had Spikes as the odd man out.

The 27-year-old Spikes contributed to an average of 89 tackles in 2012 and 2013 combined with the Patriots, but managed just 54 with Buffalo a year ago.

Free agent LB Brandon Spikes visiting former Patriots team

After just one season out of New England, linebacker Brandon Spikes could be coming back. The free agent is paying the Patriots a visit Wednesday, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.

Spikes' numbers took a hit in 2014 with the Bills. He played in all 16 games, but managed just 54 tackles and one sack. He had 92 and 86 tackles in the previous two years, respectively.

Bills to reach out to LB Brandon Spikes
by Dave Peters |

Bills general manager Doug Whaley said that the team will be reaching out to linebacker Brandon Spikes about a possible return, according to ESPN.

"We're going to reach out to him and I'm going to call him when I get back," Whaley said. "Does it fit what we're offering and where he is in his career? We would love to have him back but again, it's got to be a fit on both parts."

Spikes played a part-time, run-stopping role last season for the Bills and if re-signed he would do the same in 2015.

The 27-year-old was a second-round selection by the Patriots in 2010. In his five years in the NFL he has tallied 340 total tackles, two sacks, 15 passes defensed, two interceptions and six forced fumbles.

Brandon Spikes won't be a three-down LB if he returns to Bills
by Jason Butt |

If linebacker Brandon Spikes is going to return to the Bills it will be in a different role than what he's used to.

Via the Bills' official website, general manager Doug Whaley said depth at the position will not allow Spikes to continue playing as a three-down linebacker.

"I just talked to him today and the new staff sees a different role than maybe he does so I told him to see if he can get a team that sees him the way he sees himself,” Whaley said. “If not, come back to us and then we can talk."

The Bills are anticipating the return of Kiko Alonso, who tore his ACL last July. The Bills are also high on linebackers Preston Brown and Nigel Bradham.

Spikes recorded 54 tackles and a forced fumble in 2014.

“Brandon is one of my favorite players. We’re going to reach out to his representation and see how he would fit in this new defensive scheme and because of the depth we have whether it would fit how he sees himself as a player," Whaley said. "So it’ll be more of, ‘Hey do you want to come back and be a one or two down player? Or do you want to try to go out and still be an every down player [elsewhere]?’ So that one is going to be a kind of seeing what works for him and what works for us.”

Whaley: Bills not close to deal with Brandon Spikes
by Shawn Krest |

Bills general manager Doug Whaley spoke to the media at the Indianapolis scouting combine on Thursday and implied that LB Brandon Spikes is not likely to return to the team.

Spikes is scheduled to be a free agent in March. Whaley said that new coach Rex Ryan and his staff "see a different role" for Spikes than he envisions for himself.

Spikes had 54 tackles and a sack last year, his first with the Bills.
