Kaepernick already fond of Steve Johnson
by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer

49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick already likes what he sees from new receiver Steve Johnson, reports ESPN.

"He's another guy that's easy to throw to because he creates so much separation," Kaepernick said. "Very quick, very deceptive, and I'm happy he's on our side of the ball."

Thursday, in the 49ers' first training camp practice, we could see why Kaepernick was so pleased that the 49ers' traded a mid-round pick next year to Buffalo for Johnson. He was all over the field and he was one of the bright lights of Day 1 of the 49ers' training camp.

The report says Johnson could be a huge key for the 49ers as Kaepernick tries to take their offense to the next level in 2014. Johnson is set to be the No. 3 receiver behind Anquan Boldin and Michael Crabtree.

Steve Johnson will have to 'clearly win the job'
by Larry Hartstein |

49ers receiver Steve Johnson, who turned 28 on Tuesday, is the frontrunner for the No. 3 job, "but he will have to clearly win the job due to his scheduled $3.925 million pay for this season," reports Johnson posted three straight 1,000-yard seasons before producing just 597 receiving yards in 12 games last year.

Brandon Lloyd on the tip of OC's tongue
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer

When speaking about the new additions to the 49ers offense, coordinator Greg Roman mentioned Brandon Lloyd before anyone else.

"Brandon Lloyd has been out there every day, has done a great job of taking advantage of his opportunities," Roman said before adding, "Stevie Johnson is another guy."

Johnson is among several 49ers receivers not practicing during minicamp. That's helped Lloyd land first-team reps opposite Anquan Boldin. Lloyd has impressed and should have a good chance to make the roster and perhaps serve as a third receiver.

Stevie Johnson says it's 'pick your poison' with 49ers receivers
by Larry Hartstein |

The 49ers have 11 receivers on the roster, led by Michael Crabtree, Anquan Boldin, new acquisition Steve Johnson and second-year pro Quinton Patton. Johnson said it's going to be a nightmare for opposing defenses.

"Right now, we’re all ones," Johnson told the team's website. "The defense has gotta pick their poison, whether they’re going to double-team Anquan, whether they’re going to double-team Crab, Vernon (Davis), me, Q.P. is coming in – you gotta pick your poison."

Johnson figures to open the season as the No. 4 option behind Crabtree, Boldin and Davis.

Stevie Johnson's Fantasy value at the end of the line?
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer

When you're the top receiver in Buffalo, you have a shot at 1,000 yards and lots of catches. But when you get traded from that spot to one where you're just another fish in a pond, your chances of being a stellar contributor decline. That's what's going on with Steve Johnson, who was traded from the Bills to the 49ers

Johnson joins a Niners team ripe with receiving talent. Michael Crabtree is a stud outside threat, Anquan Boldin has made his living in the slot but can also work outside. Quinton Patton is a young receiver with some wheels. And Vernon Davis is also in the mix. How, exactly, is Johnson supposed to come up with 1,000-plus yards and lots of touchdowns with that crew to work with?

Answer: He's not. We've already seen his numbers tumble since his breakout 2010 season and last year his body didn't do him any favors after reportedly not working out during the offseason. We expect Johnson to play a complementary role with the Niners, more than likely in the slot. He's hard to get excited about. Johnson might be worth a late-round pick in drafts this summer.
