Andrew Quarless comes down with touchdown reception
by Igor Mello |

Packers tight end Andrew Quarless got in the end zone Friday night against the Raiders in exhibition play. Quarless caught a 6-yard catch from Aaron Rodgers late in the second quarter. It was his only catch and target of the night.

Richard Rodgers gets the start
by Larry Hartstein |

Rookie tight end Richard Rodgers started for the Packers on Saturday night, playing the entire 12-play opening drive, reports the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. He was not targeted but he lined up all over the field and was more open in the end zone than Randall Cobb when Aaron Rodgers hit Cobb for a 3-yard touchdown.

Richard Rodgers is battling Brandon Bostick and Andrew Quarless for the starting job.

Brandon Bostick getting more first-team reps
by Larry Hartstein |

Packers tight end Brandon Bostick ran with the No. 1 offense during the two-minute drill Monday and caught three passes in the first five plays, reports The website said Bostick "might be the Packers' closest approximation" to Jermichael Finley, who's trying to gain medical clearance following a neck injury.

Bostick apparently has moved ahead of Andrew Quarless and Richard Rodgers in the battle to be the primary pass-catching tight end. "He's super talented," backup quarterback Scott Tolzien said of Bostick. "He's a big body that can also move really well, so he creates a mismatch."

TE still open for Packers
by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer

The Packers are trying to figure out their tight end situation heading into training camp, reports ESPN.

The longer Jermichael Finley (neck) remains unsigned, the more likely it appears his time in Green Bay -- and perhaps in the NFL -- is over, despite his desire to continue to play.

The Packers re-signed Andrew Quarless to a two-year, $3 million contract in March, but that's hardly starter's money. The door is open for rookie third-round draft pick Richard Rodgers, who performed well enough during the organized team activities and minicamp practices (which Quarless missed because of injury) to move into the starting spot. Rodgers has the kind of dynamic athletic ability that Finley brought to the position.

The wild card there is Colt Lyerla, the undrafted but talented rookie from Oregon. Had Lyerla not left the Ducks' program and run into trouble subsequently last year, he might have been a high draft pick. The Packers also will have to assess whether Brandon Bostick can make a bigger impact than he did last season.

Richard Rodgers to be Packers' starting tight end?
by Larry Hartstein |

Richard Rodgers, a 6-4, 257-pound rookie out of California, "might have the inside track" to be the Packers' starting tight end, ahead of Brandon Bostick and Andrew Quarless, reports At least once every offseason practice, Rodgers "made an eye-catching play in the passing game."

Coach Mike McCarthy said Rodgers, who got more reps due to Quarless' absence, was "very productive." The report said Rodgers must show "he can be an effective blocker once the pads come on in training camp, but at this point he might be in the lead."
