McCoy tallied three tackles (all solo), including two for loss, a sack and two passes defensed in Sunday's 31-24 victory over the Falcons.
The All-Pro tackle came up big when it counted most, notching the second of his two deflections on the day on Matt Ryan's last-gasp, fourth-down pass attempt with 1:18 remaining in the game. McCoy was effective throughout the game as well, dropping the Falcons signal-caller for a six-yard loss on Atlanta's first possession of the second half. While his tackle numbers will always be somewhat capped by his interior line spot, McCoy looks poised to be as disruptive as ever in new defensive coordinator Mike Smith's aggressive scheme.
McCoy logged two tackles (one solo) and a half-sack in Friday's 30-13 preseason victory over the Browns.
The Pro Bowl tackle got in on the fun on a night when the Bucs defense tallied a whopping eight sacks overall. McCoy dealt with an ankle injury several days ago but appeared unencumbered Friday, serving as an active presence and drawing plenty of attention in the middle. He also combined with offseason acquistion Robert Ayers for a half-sack of Robert Griffin III, a hit which caused a fumble that the Bucs argued they'd recovered but that insatant replay apparently couldn't confirm. McCoy looks primed for another strong season anchoring Tampa's defensive line and figures to benefit from playing alongside the likes of Ayers and dynamic Noah Spence in certain personnel packages.
McCoy's ankle issue figures to be a thing of the past soon, while his Week 1 status shouldn't be in danger if he avoids any potential setbacks. The
McCoy missed portions of practice last week and went on to sit out the Buccaneers' preseason matchup versus the Jaguars on Saturday. However, after the extra time off, the 28-year-old defensive tackle should be back on the practice field Monday, albeit in a limited fashion. McCoy will likely be eased into action in order to avoid any setbacks prior to Week 1. A projected starter for the upcoming season, McCoy will look to build on the 34 tackles and 8.5 sacks he produced during the 2015 campaign.
McCoy has been arguably the most dominant interior defensive lineman for the past several years. In each of the last three seasons, the seven-year vet has recorded at least 8.5 sacks. The only way McCoy is going to get better is if he stays healthy on and the field, and playing through an ankle injury in the preseason is not in McCoy's nor the team's best interest at this point.
