Buccaneers' Gerald McCoy: Determined to step up play in 2017
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

McCoy is determined to take his fourth-quarter production up a notch in 2017 following conversations with several fellow Pro Bowlers in January, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports. "It hit home to the point where I re-evaluated myself, my whole career, up to this point,'' McCoy said. "The gist of what it is, is I haven't done enough to lead this team. Simple as that. If this team goes to the next level, as much as you need a franchise quarterback and those things are great, this organization, this team to win a Super Bowl was built on defense. That guy in the middle is what makes everything roll."

McCoy described his conversations with the unnamed players as a "reality check" as to what his impact, or lack thereof, had been in crunch time over the last few seasons. The multi-time Pro Bowler came to the conclusion that despite the well-deserved accolades he's received throughout his first eight campaigns, not enough of his sacks have come in the fourth quarter. A majority of McCoy's fourth-quarter sacks have occurred with the outcome of the game already decided, and last season, McCoy managed just two sacks in the final quarter of games overall. Plus he failed to notch any QB traps in the last four games altogether, a key stretch when the Bucs were in the midst of a playoff push that ultimately fell short. Motivated by the realization that he has plenty of room for improvement in key moments, the 29-year-old has already vowed to make the 2017 campaign a turning point in that regard. "My approach to everything will be different. The media. My workouts. Practice. The meeting room. Games. Something has to change. ... I was just always taught when more than one person is saying the same thing, there's got to be some truth to it.''

Buccaneers' Gerald McCoy: Has season-high six tackles in Week 17 win
by RotoWire Staff | Special to

McCoy produced six tackles (five solo) in Sunday's 17-16 win over the Panthers.

McCoy was at his most active in the season finale, with his tackle total representing a season-high figure. The seventh-year pro was a seamless fit into defensive coordinator Mike Smith's scheme, posting a solid seven sacks while also equaling a career high in forced fumbles (two) and establishing a new personal best in fumble recoveries (two) and passes defensed (five). McCoy was once again besieged by nagging injuries but still played 15 games and has demonstrated the capacity to consistently overcome those ailments and deliver positive results. The 28-year-old now has 33.5 sacks over the last four seasons and could be even more effective in 2017 playing in Smith's system for a second season.

Buccaneers' Gerald McCoy: Practices Friday, questionable for Week 16
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

McCoy (foot) logged a full practice Friday and is listed as questionable for Saturday's game against the Saints.

The Pro Bowl defensive tackle has been playing through a foot injury since late November, so his participation in Friday's practice is an encouraging sign that he'll be able to take the field against the Saints. McCoy did not appear to be overly limited in Week 15 as he played 60 snaps against the Cowboys.

Buccaneers' Gerald McCoy: Named to fifth Pro Bowl earlier this week
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

McCoy was named to his fifth Pro Bowl this week, Jenna Laine of reports.

The standout tackle has put in another productive season despite once again battling a myriad of minor injuries. McCoy's seven sacks lead the Bucs and have him tied with the Rams' Aaron Donald for the second-highest figure among defensive tackles, just a half-sack behind pace-setter Geno Atkins. He's had his hands on the ball frequently as well, forcing two fumbles, recovering two as well, and defensing a pair of passes. McCoy also lays claim to the second-most sacks by a defensive tackle (38.5) since 2012, as well as the fifth-most tackles for loss over that span.
