Despite missing the team's entire offseason workout program because of an ankle injury,
"I wish he would've gotten the work with coach Callahan," Gruden said. "Trent is a very smart guy and he's been attentive in all the meetings. I just wish he would've got the reps, but it's not really a concern. If that's my only concern going in [to camp], it's very minor so that's good."
Williams injured his left ankle at the end of last season and he experienced soreness while working out in the offseason.
Williams hurt the ankle during the last year's final game. He adjusted his offseason training to accommodate and rehab the injury but when the soreness continued it was discovered the injury was slightly more serious than anticipated.
“It’s been an ongoing thing and my mindset was to get it 100 percent before we go into camp,” Williams said. “Obviously, didn’t want any setbacks in OTAs. I want it 100 percent so I can put it behind me and give my team the best.
“We got it pinpointed to what exactly it is. It’s encouraging that we’ve got the right plan,” Williams added. “Training camp is probably the most vital thing that I need to be ready for.”
Williams recently visited a foot/ankle specialist and he said the injury does not need surgery to heal correctly. Williams added that he has lost 20 pounds to help take pressure off the ankle, but he will most likely be held out until training camp.
