Both Bears' safety spots up for grabs
by Larry Hartstein |

Five-time Pro Bowler Adrian Wilson and Danny McCray worked as the Bears' starting safeties Friday, but both positions are truly up for grabs, reports Ryan Mundy, Brock Vereen and M.D. Jennings also have taken snaps with the starters.

Chris Conte (shoulder) and Craig Steltz (groin) remain on the PUP list. If Conte comes back healthy, he'll be a favorite to start at free safety, the website said.

Bears sign M.D. Jennings
by Larry Hartstein |

The Bears signed free agent safety M.D. Jennings to a one-year deal. Jennings started all 16 games for the Packers last season, making 74 tackles.

Jennings became an unrestricted free agent after Green Bay declined to make him a qualifying offer.

Safety is Green Bay's weakest link
by Larry Hartstein |

Packers starting safeties Morgan Burnett and M.D. Jennings combined for zero interceptions last season, the first time that's happened in Green Bay since at least the 1950s, reports the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Every other NFL team got an interception from a safety on its roster.

"We just didn't get it done and I don't think that was a lack of ability, because the ability is there," safeties coach Darren Perry told the paper. "We just have to make sure we're consistent."

Burnett led the team with three fumble recoveries, but also paced the Packers with 17 missed tackles. Coach Mike McCarthy said immediately after the season that he wants more "impact players" on defense.

Green Bay could give a longer look to Sean Richardson or Micah Hyde, or address the safety position through free agency and the draft.

M.D. Jennings has monster day
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer

Packers defensive back M.D. Jennings, who hadn't done anything especially notable on defense coming into the day, made two huge plays Week 3 at Cincinnati. He recovered a fumble by BenJarvus Green-Ellis and returned it for a touchdown early in the second quarter and then sacked quarterback Andy Dalton on the very next drive. The touchdown was the second of his career, and the sack was the first. He also had four tackles, including three solo, on the day.

Morgan Burnett's injury could force lineup change in secondary
by Michael Hurcomb |

With Morgan Burnett's return date unknown, the Packers could be counting on safeties M.D. Jennings and Jerron McMillian to start in the season opener against the 49ers, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Burnett left Friday's preseason game against the Seahawks with a hamstring injury.

"We both know what we're doing," said McMillian, who was competing with Jennings for starting strong safety job before Burnett was hurt. "That's the key and we have to both be communicating."
