Ellis, Raiders making it official: The Raiders expect to get more out of new DE Greg Ellis than just the pass-rush specialist he was in 11 seasons with the Cowboys. Ellis, who signed with the Raiders on Monday after being released by the Cowboys earlier this month, recorded 20.5 sacks in a part-time role the past two seasons. Oakland envisions the 33-year-old Ellis as the every-down player he was earlier in his career. "I think he can be," Raiders coach Tom Cable said Wednesday. "You look at the film and he's been doing that, albeit in a different position. This is a guy you would rely on to come in and compete to be a starter and all that. He's got so much left in terms of where he's at physically, in terms of his body, his production, so (it's) just a positive for our team."

Fantasy Analysis

Ellis played OLB the last two seasons in Dallas' 3-4 system but is listed at DE on the Raiders roster. That is the position he played while with the Cowboys before being moved by former coach Bill Parcells at the end of the 2006 season. Ellis has had at least 7.5 sacks in seven of his 11 NFL seasons and has started all but six of the 162 games he has played in during his career. Consider him a low-end DL in IDP leagues. Ignore him on Draft Day but consider picking him up if needed during the season,

DE Greg Ellis, the veteran who had 20.5 sacks over the past two years playing as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense with the Cowboys, surprisingly landed with the Raiders. Teams rumored to be pursing Ellis included New England, Kansas City and Denver -- all of which play the 3-4 alignment in which Ellis flourished in Dallas. Raiders coach Tom Cable said Ellis was a 4-3 end long before he was a 3-4 linebacker and deemed it a good veteran fit, adding another team-first personality to go along with backup quarterback Jeff Garcia and fullback Lorenzo Neal. "It came about pretty quick last week, and once it got in motion, I think this was the place he wanted to be, and obviously, what we're doing defensively, it fits him," Cable said. "He started out as a 4-3 end and became an outside backer in a 3-4 and now he's in a 4-3. "It makes our team better. I said from the very beginning we'd try to do that, when possible, when it presented itself, so it's a good deal for us." 61/8/2009
