Coach Jason Garrett is looking at other teams' approaches to find a solution. He might cut back the time players spend on the field early in the offseason, the report said.
“It is valuable to do the football stuff. We don’t feel like there’s a lot of football stuff right now,” Garrett told the website. “We want to be careful about how much we take away from that. But there’s a couple weeks prior to all that stuff starting. We’ve talked about tweaking the daily schedule and what we’re doing those first couple weeks as we start to lay the foundation for the offseason.”
Owner Jerry Jones still thinks Carter can be an outstanding player.
“He’s working at it, though. We saw things, there’s an old adage, if you’ve seen him do it a few times, you know they can do it at least and you go from there,” Jones told the paper. “We know he can do what this defense calls for and be outstanding. We have some real reasons to be excited about him and certainly he’d be the first to say that he had some things that he’d like to take back.
“Overall, he’s got a future here … and that’s a positive. It’s not a condition, he’s going to become more of a pro and more understanding about the kind of commitment and the kind of detail and preparation it takes and he’ll be a lot better for it," Jones added. "He’s got the other stuff that nobody can coach, and that is speed and physical assets.”
Carter had 96 tackles, three passes defensed and two sacks in 15 games last year.
