Gettis was released by the Giants on Saturday, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
The Giants needed to make room for running back Shane Vereen (triceps) to return from IR, so Gettis' roster spot was given up.
Gettis (calf) will get the start Sunday against the Browns.
Gettis has been cleared to play and is expected to fill in for Justin Pugh (knee), who is inactive Sunday.
Gettis was promoted to the Giants' active roster on Wednesday, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
Gettis has seen limited action with the Giants over the last two seasons and has spent his entire 2016 campaign on the team's practice squad. However, with starting left guard Justin Pugh going down with a sprained MCL in his right knee, Gettis has been promoted to the active roster and should provide some much-needed depth at the position.
