The contract includes $40 million in guaranteed money and a $20 million signing bonus, making Berry the highest paid safety in the NFL. The five-time Pro Bowler recorded 77 tackles in 2016 and picked off four passes, two of them for touchdowns. Berry is undoubtedly one of the leaders of Kansas City's defense and the deal will keep him in that role for the foreseeable future. The fact that he did not require a franchise tag also gives the Chiefs an opportunity to place a tag on defensive tackle Dontari Poe, which would keep him in Kansas City for the 2017 season.
Berry and defensive tackle Dontari Poe are both in search of long-term contracts to remain in Kansas City, but unless either one of them unexpectedly secures such a deal, it's anticipated that Berry will be designated as the Chiefs' franchise player for a second straight season. After holding out during training camp last year, Berry has made it clear that he'll refuse to play under the tag in 2017, which, barring an unforeseen development in the next couple days, figures to result in another standoff between the Chiefs and their five-time Pro Bowler this offseason.
Berry earned $10.8 million this season while playing under Kansas City's franchise tag, but that only came after he reported late for training camp in the wake of an unsuccessful attempt to secure a long-term contract. Despite a delayed start to his 2016 campaign, Berry still finished with 77 tackles (62 solo), four interceptions and two defensive touchdowns, earning his fifth Pro Bowl selection along the way. At 28 years old, Berry is a vital cog in the

Berry injured his Achilles in Week 17's win over the Chargers, but after getting the past week off to rest, the safety returned to the practice field as a full participant. He will be a full-go for Sunday's tilt with the Steelers, bolstering the Chiefs' secondary.
