That's what happened on Thursday night when they drafted tight end
Think about this offense now.
You can't double cover him because of Johnson and Tate, and new offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi comes from New Orleans, where Jimmy Graham was a dominant force. The Lions wanted an upgrade at tight end, and Ebron is the answer.
He should be considered a potential starter in all Fantasy leagues with a late-round pick, and he's a late first-round selection in rookie-only drafts. The Lions are going to be fun to watch in 2014.
"Any time we miss a ball, I'm going straight to him, 'Hey, did I look back? Turn my head late? Did that feel right? What can I do better?'" Tate told MLive.com. "I think that's where it starts, just talking it out. I can't read his mind, he can't read my mind, so we're just talking it out."
Tate, the team's No. 2 receiver, said he's adjusting to Stafford's powerful arm. But he also praised Stafford's accuracy.
"He's placed some balls on air and seven-on-sevens and I'm like, 'Wow, that's a great ball,'" Tate said. "For instance, I run a basic route, which is a 10-, 12-yard in, and he's put it right there, on the dot, where I can split the safeties and potentially score."
As the website noted, Moore caught at least 50 passes and six scores in four of the five years he played at least 14 games with New Orleans. Both of those numbers should be attainable for Tate in Motown.
Ultimately, Tate is excited about fitting his skills in with what's being asked of him.
"Here we have our rules, initially, to learn the offense, but at the end of the day you have to play football," Tate said. "I think that's what I do best. Just finding ways to get open. Although a route is supposed to be at 15 yards, sometimes you're going to get pressed and your mental clock tells you to break it down to 12 (yards) and it'll time up correctly. I'm a mental clock kind of guy. In some instances it's going to be backyard football, find the hole and make a play, make a guy miss and go score with it. I see my game really fitting into this offense really well."
Tate has emerged into one of this year's hottest breakout candidates and a borderline No. 2 Fantasy receiver. Expect him to get taken between Rounds 5 and 7 depending on league size and scoring.
The Lions had a 60/40 pass-to-run ratio last season, and that was their most balanced in years, according to the team's website.
“For me it just made more sense to come here,” Tate said. “You know, I just see a ton of upside in the vision that this organization has and that I have. It’s all the same. I’m excited just to be a part of something special.
“Like I said, I’m leaving a run-heavy offense to a pass-happy offense, so that’s exciting. I get to play with one of the best to ever play the game, so I wanted to jump on that opportunity and I’m just excited.”
With Calvin Johnson lining up opposite him, Matthew Stafford throwing the passes, and Reggie Bush and Joique Bell in the backfield, Tate said he sees the Lions "opening it up everywhere. I think it’s going to be tough to stop us.”
Start with Tate, who is coming off a career year in 2013 with 64 catches for 898 yards and five touchdowns in Seattle. He has been stifled by the Seahawks run-heavy offense the past two years with Russell Wilson, but all that is about to change.
This should be his first chance for a 1,000-yard season, and he should score at least six touchdowns. I like Tate as a No. 3 receiver in all leagues with a mid-round pick.
As for Stafford, this gives him another playmaker, which is key. Johnson is the best receiver in the NFL, and Reggie Bush and Joique Bell are solid out of the backfield. Joseph Fauria is a sleeper tight end, but Tate adds another dimension to this passing game.
Put Stafford back on your list as a Top 5 quarterback, and I would draft him as early as Round 4 after the Top 3 come off the board in Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees.
