Davis will compete with Trevone Boykin for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports. Head coach Pete Carroll said of the competition, "It's been a good mix so far. So we brought him (Davis) in we'll make these evaluations as we get back but I think Austin showed very well for himself."
Davis plays with a style different from Russell Wilson and Boykin, as he lacks a dual-threat quality in his game, but that doesn't mean he'll assume the No. 3 spot on depth chart. The 28-year-old boasts more starting experience than his counterpart and given Boykin's legal troubles this summer, Davis may be a safer option to back up Wilson this fall. Look for more updates on the competition to come throughout training camp.
Davis signed a contract Monday with the Seahawks, John Boyle of Seahawks.com reports.
In a corresponding move, the team released No. 3 quarterback Jake Heaps to open a spot on the camp roster for Davis. Although the Seahawks recently brought in Colin Kaepernick for a meeting, it appears that Davis will be the veteran quarterback that competes with Trevone Boykin in camp for the backup gig behind starter Russell Wilson. Davis has had stints with the Rams, Browns and Broncos over the past three seasons, but has failed to maintain a roster spot with any of those clubs on a long-term basis.
Davis was waived by the Broncos on Monday, Troy Renck of Denver7 News reports.
Davis, the Broncos' third string quarterback, didn't play a single snap in his 15 weeks on the roster and wasn't likely to unless injuries to Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch forced him into action. His absence won't impact the offense much at all.
The Broncos signed Davis on Saturday, Troy Renck of Denver 7 News reports.
Recently cut by the Browns, Davis will slot into Mark Sanchez's spot on the quarterback depth chart behind starter Trevor Siemian and rookie Paxton Lynch.
After a concussion stunted his involvement during the preseason, Davis found himself on the bottom of the Browns' quarterback depth chart. He's shown flashes of being a solid NFL quarterback, but potential injury concerns may leave him off a team's roster before the start of the season.
