Rivera on Newton's fundamentals: 'Not as sound as he needs to be'
by Larry Hartstein | Senior Analyst

For Panthers quarterback Cam Newton to take the next step in his development, he must continue to improve his fundamentals, coach Ron Rivera told reporters.

"I'd like to see him continue to work on his position-specific skills ... his technique, his throwing motion," Rivera said at the NFL owners meeting, per "He relies so much on his great athleticism that sometimes he's not as sound as he needs to be on his fundamentals.

"That's the next step in being sound in everything he does."

Entering his fifth season, Newton has a career completion percentage of 59.5.

Panthers not concerned about lack of new contract affecting QB Cam Newton
by Dave Peters |

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is set to play out the last year of his current contract in 2015. Although the team would like to sign him to an extension, head coach Ron Rivera doesn't think it will be a distraction, reports the Charlotte Observer.

When asked if Newton could have the franchise tag placed on him in 2016, Rivera said he hopes it doesn't come to that.

"Personally, yes I would," Rivera said when asked if he wants the negotiations to wrap up before the season.

"But they have a timetable, both sides do I imagine. Both sides have a plan and hopefully we can all get everything worked out together."

Rivera continued making it clear that he's not worried about Newton's performance on the field if an extension isn't worked out right away.

"I think our quarterback is a smart, savvy young man, understands the dynamics of the game," he said. "I think he's the kind of guy who's able to focus on certain aspects of the game and put things aside. Obviously, that's a work in progress right now."

by Jason Butt |

Police stated Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is not a person of interest in a shooting at a Charlotte, N.C. nightclub, according to the Associated Press.

Newton was photographed at Label nightclub on stage with rapper Young Jeezy last weekend before gunshots were fired into a crowd. Two people sustained non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the gunfire.

In a video obtained by Charlotte's WSOC TV, Newton is spotted partying at the venue before he, along with the rest of the party's attendants, ducked when shots were fired

Report: Panthers, Cam Newton continue extension talks
by Jason Butt |

Quarterback Cam Newton's representation and the Panthers have continued to engage in contract extension talks during the NFL combine, reports the Charlotte Observer.

Newton, however, is in no rush to sign a deal as he's fine with waiting for Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson and Colts quarterback Andrew Luck to hammer out new contracts first. That way, the quarterback market can reset, ensuring the maximum amount of dollars for Newton to earn.

In 14 games, Newton threw for 3,127 yards, 18 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He also ran for 539 yards and five touchdowns.

Panthers' Rivera: Cam Newton is as healthy as he's been in long time
by Igor Mello |

Panthers coach Ron Rivera wouldn't discuss the contract status of Cam Newton, but told reporters during his combine press conference on Thursday that he is not in the market for a quarterback. The team appears to be sold on Newton, who is entering the final year of his four-year, $22,025,498 rookie contract, according to ESPN. He is due to make $14.67 million in 2015.

Rivera noted that he recently met with Newton and that he is as healthy as he has been in a very long time. Newton, No. 1 overall pick of the 2011 draft, threw for 3,127 yards with 18 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 2014.
