Gramatica done for the season: The Saints placed kicker Martin Gramatica on injured reserve and re-signed sixth-round draft pick Taylor Mehlhaff. Gramatica, who had been kicking with a sore groin, has missed four field goals in the past three games. All of the misses, one of which was blocked and returned for a touchdown by Minnesota on Monday night, proved critical in close losses to Denver and the Vikings. Gramatica, signed by the Saints late last season, beat out Mehlhaff in training camp. Mehlhaff, a rookie from Wisconsin, has yet to attempt a regular season kick in the NFL.

Fantasy Analysis

Fantasy owners relying on Gramatica's leg to put up some points as part of the Saints' explosive offense need to go pick up Mehlhaff off the waiver wire. We expect Mehlhaff to be a trendy pick up, but until the rookie proves that he's got the leg to kick in this league (something he didn't do in the preseason), he's not worth starting. Keep in mind that Saints coach Sean Payton is from the Bill Parcells school of coaching, which means he can lose patience with Mehlhaff in a snap and find someone else to kick for him. Gramatica should be dropped from all leagues.
