Russell ahead of Garcia for job: The Contra Costa Times reports Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell will start this year ahead of Jeff Garcia. Even though Russell has struggled this offseason, Russell will still hold the job. The report says Russell would have to do "a faceplant of major proportions" to lose the starter's spot. Russell's last six games of the 2008 season carry considerably more weight than some shaky non-contact practices this summer.

Fantasy Analysis

This is a good sign that Russell should win the job, and hopefully there will be no pressure from Garcia during training camp. Russell also recently planned a voluntary passing camp with his receivers to continue their rapport prior to training camp. We still consider Russell a No. 2 Fantasy QB at best worth a late-round pick, and Garcia should not be drafted in any formats.

QB Jeff Garcia proclaimed himself a mentor to the established starter, JaMarcus Russell, when Garcia first met the Oakland media after he'd signed as a free agent. His tone seemed to change recently, perhaps sparked by Russell's poor showing in on-field workouts. "I understand the role that I have basically assumed that JaMarcus was drafted to be the starting quarterback," Garcia said. "But I think there has to be a realization at some point as to putting the best players on the field that are going to give you the best chance to win. Now if JaMarcus is that guy, then he definitely deserves to be on the field and should be on the field. But if for some reason with what I bring as a player, from a competitive nature, and the intensity and emotion that I bring to the field, if that gives us a better chance to win games, then that decision is going to be left up to the coach and hopefully he can make the right decision for the team." 52/1/2009
