This signing might have seemed a bit surprising at first glance, but it made a lot more sense once the Ravens announced that Kenneth Dixon will be suspended for the first four games of the 2017 season. Dixon's backfield mate, Terrance West, isn't much of a pass catcher, so Woodhead is a sensible addition to the Baltimore backfield. It's still surprising to see the 33-year-old get a three-year contract while recovering from a torn ACL, but the structure of the deal probably limits Baltimore's investment beyond the first season. Assuming Woodhead makes a full recovery from the injury he suffered in Week 2, he should be a valuable target for Joe Flacco on check-downs. Woodhead said Friday that his knee feels great, adding that he'd only continue playing if he knew he could be the same player he was in past years, according to ESPN's Jamison Hensley.
The pass-catching specialist spent most of 2016 on the mend following a Week 2 tear of his ACL, but Rapoport indicates he's fully recovered from the issue. San Diego offered Woodhead a contract, but it appears he will find a role with a Baltimore squad that has no true lead back at this point. While it's unlikely the 33-year-old will head the Ravens' backfield, he could see plenty of action in the passing game and thus offer utility in PPR leagues.
Woodhead has been extended a contract offer, his agent Chris Gittings of OneWest Sports confirmed to Michael Gehlken on Thursday.
It makes sense that the Chargers would be aggressive in bringing back Woodhead as the diminutive running back has been a staple of the offense when healthy. It's the "when healthy" that has given some pause for concern, as Woodhead has missed 27 games in four years with the Chargers, including 14 last year after tearing his ACL. Given his age and injury history, it doesn't seem likely the Chargers will bring Woodhead back on a long-term contract, but that shouldn't dissuade fantasy owners from drafting the 33-year-old next season, especially in PPR leagues.
Woodhead played in just two games this season before suffering a torn ACL. Although that severely restricted his output going into unrestricted free agency, the early timing of the injury has Woodhead expected to be fully healthy for offseason workouts. Whether those take place with the Chargers or not remains to be seen, but after workhorse second-year tailback Melvin Gordon (knee/hip) ended this season banged up himself, having Woodhead around would ideally enable Los Angeles to keep both backs relatively fresh in 2017.
Woodhead is "six weeks ahead of schedule" in his recovery from an ACL tear in his right knee, Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
As he approaches the four-month mark in his rehab, Woodhead has already progressed to cutting, which bodes well for his personal goal of full health by the start of the offseason program. Where he'll be situated in a few months remains to be seen, though, due to his upcoming unrestricted free agency. If the Chargers keep him around as a complement to workhorse RB Melvin Gordon, Woodhead will help lead the charge in their relocation to Los Angeles.
