Panthers' Mike Tolbert: Nine carries against Niners
by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Tolbert rushed nine times for 25 yards in Sunday's win over the 49ers.

Tolbert's nine carries Sunday were his second-most since the end of the 2013 season, as he saw his workload expanded once starting tailback Jonathan Stewart (hamstring) was forced into an early exit. While backup running back Fozzy Whittaker was the chief beneficiary, gaining 131 all-purpose yards on 19 touches in Stewart's absence, Tolbert's normal, situation-based usage was expanded somewhat Sunday. It's worth noting, however, that reserve runner Cameron Artis-Payne was inactive, which won't be the case with Stewart potentially out the next couple weeks. Nonetheless, the Panthers could opt for a more committee-based approach without Stewart, which would figure to see Tolbert touch the ball slightly more than usual.

Panthers' Mike Tolbert: Three touches in opener
by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Tolbert rushed twice for six yards and caught one pass for one yard in Carolina's season-opening loss to the Broncos.

Tolbert played 28 of the Panthers' 73 offensive plays, which more than doubled backup tailback Fozzy Whittaker's 13 snaps, but he didn't get the ball much when on the field. Given Tolbert's fullback position, that's not an uncommon occurrence, even if he's one of the more utilized players at his position league-wide. When the Panthers did venture into Tolbert's favored red zone area, quarterback Cam Newton threw a touchdown to Kelvin Benjamin before later being chosen to run the ball in himself from two yards out for Carolina's lone rushing touchdown.

Panthers' Mike Tolbert: Two touches Friday
by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Tolbert rushed once for seven yards and caught one pass for 11 yards in Friday's preseason game versus New England.

Tolbert did well with the couple of opportunities he got to touch the ball Friday. That being said, given Tolbert's fullback position, he can't be relied upon for a large touch total. That proved especially true Friday, when the Panthers' offense struggled mightily to move the ball, thus robbing Tolbert from being involved in the red zone, where his a large proportion of his fantasy value resides.

Panthers' Mike Tolbert: Gets a few looks in preseason opener
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Tolbert had three carries for 11 yards in Thursday's preseason opener against the Ravens.

Tolbert received three consecutive carries on the game's opening drive, getting in and out without suffering an injury. He figures to reprise his unique role from year's past, serving as a mixture of lead blocker, passing-down back and goal-line weapon. Although the role doesn't come with much fantasy upside, Tolbert may be a suitable bye-week replacement in deeper leagues.

Panthers' Mike Tolbert: Re-signs with Carolina
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Carolina Panthers have signed Mike Tolbert to a two-year deal.

Tolbert, who has been a Pro Bowl selection in two of the past three seasons, had been headed for free agency, but the versatile fullback will stay with the Panthers on the heels of a 2015 campaign in which he carried the ball 62 times for 256 yards and a TD, while catching 18 passes for 154 yards and three receiving scores. Tolbert, who turns 31 in November, will thus reprise his role as the Panthers' starting fullback, a job that carries modest fantasy utility in general, though at times when injuries hit the team's backfield, the 5-foot-9, 250-pounder is called upon to see added touches in the Carolina offense.
