Tempo will determine Ryan Mallett, Brian Hoyer QB battle for Texans
by Shawn Krest |

The Texans quarterback battle will come down to more than who puts up better numbers in the preseason. Coach Bill O'Brien is looking at the big picture when it comes to Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer

"I really think it’s important for these guys to be able to operate the offense at a high tempo,” O’Brien said, per “We have a lot of different types of tempo, but to be in and out of the huddle or when it’s no huddle, changing the pace of practice and handling that on their own. Being able to communicate the play, get people lined up, change the cadence, get us into the right play and then complete the pass."

Texans in no hurry to name starting QB
by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer

Texans coach Bill O'Brien said Monday there was "no timetable" for the team to name a starting quarterback, as Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer battle for the No. 1 spot, per the Houston Chronicle

The pair have been splitting first-team reps during OTAs and neither has emerged enough for O'Brien to make a definitive call. Mallett threw for 400 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions before suffering a torn pectoral muscle, while Hoyer started strong last season with the Browns but faded, finishing with 3,326 yards, 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

As expected, Texans quarterbacks Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett split reps with the first-team during Wednesday's OTA practice, according to the Houston Chronicle

Hoyer is no stranger to competing for a starting job after going through the process in Cleveland against Johnny Manziel a year ago.

“I’ve been through it before,” Hoyer said. “I’m not going to let it affect me and I’ll just be myself and really focus on the things that I can control.”

Hoyer, behind an offensive line that struggled following Alex Mack's season-ending injury, finished 2014 with 3,326 yards, 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Mallett, who suffered a season-ending torn pectoral, appeared in three games for Houston and threw for 400 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Texans QB Ryan Mallett: I'm ready to go
by Brandon Wise |

Texans quarterback Ryan Mallett finally got his chance to start in the league last season. Unfortunately, his starting opportunity was cut short after three games when he tore a pectoral muscle. Mallet said on Monday he's finally back to healthy after rehabbing the injury, according to

"I'm ready to go," Mallet replied. "I'm still getting better every day. I don't feel any restrictions. It's about me. It's about managing and being smart with my body. Just doing the right thing as we progress. I need to play in August, September, and those months. Not April right now, you know?"

Mallet is expected to split first team reps with newcomer Brian Hoyer in OTAs at quarterback.

Texans' Brian Hoyer, Ryan Mallett to split reps at QB during OTAs
by Brandon Wise |

Texans quarterbacks Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett are expected to split first-team reps under center during offseason team activities this summer, according to the team's website.

"It's not new -- for me, it's kind of just getting back on the bike," Hoyer said Monday. "You learn to ride a bike and whether you don't ride it for a year or two, you can pick it up pretty quickly. There's some adjustments, especially with (George) Godsey being the offensive coordinator. It's been a great three weeks so far of getting re-acclimated and learning the nuances that he's kind of put his own spin on."

Hoyer threw for 3,326 yards with 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 2014 with the Browns.

"For me, I'm kind of re-acclimating myself, so we're all kind of learning together," Hoyer said. "We've put a lot of extra work in after our workouts, whether it's going in the film room and looking at formations or going over concepts. I think that's really helped me and it's helped those guys, too. Especially in this offense, you're asked to do so much, so if you can do without thinking, it speeds up the process that much more."

Mallett threw for 400 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in three games for Houston before suffering a season-ending pectoral injury.
