Jason LaCanfora: Several notable veterans could be released
by Marty Gitlin |

The release of Bengals former featured back BenJarvus Green-Ellis is not the only significant move that will be made by NFL teams involving veterans, per NFL Insider Jason La Canfora.

La Canfora is speculating that the Browns could part with Nate Burleson and that the Jets might let go of fellow wide receiver Stephen Hill. The former has been limited by injury in the preseason while the latter has proven disappointing throughout his young career.

Also on the bubble, according to La Canfora, is Patriots backup quarterback Ryan Mallett, though he is likely to stay because of the team's possible decision to keep three players at that position.

Jimmy Garoppolo leaps over Ryan Mallett in second preseason game
by Igor Mello |

Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo leaped over Ryan Mallett in the depth chart and was used as the first backup during Friday's preseason game against the Eagles.

Garoppolo entered the game for Tom Brady on the third drive of the game and fired a 15-yard touchdown pass to James Develin. On the ensuing drive, he hooked up with Brandon LaFell for a 4-yard touchdown strike in the second quarter. He completed 6 of 12 pass attempts for 72 yards, with two touchdowns and no interceptions. He finished with a 108.3 quarterback rating.

Mallett started the third quarter in place of Garoppolo and scored on a 6-yard run in his first drive. He then fired a 17-yard touchdown to Brian Tyms, who leaped over the defender to make the grab. He completed 7 of 11 pass attempts for 92 yards, with one touchdown and no interceptions. He was sacked once and had four rushes for 9 yards.

Ryan Mallett disappoints in potential trade showcase
by Larry Hartstein |

Thursday night's preseason opener against the Redskins reportedly was meant as a trade showcase for Ryan Mallett, the Patriots' fourth-year quarterback. Mallett didn't stir up much interest.

He played the entire first half, going 5 for 12 for 55 yards and leading New England to zero points. Mallett's highly inaccurate performance means he might not enter the season as Tom Brady's backup. Rookie Jimmy Garoppolo is pushing for the No. 2 job.

Tom Brady to sit, Ryan Mallett to start at Washington
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer

The Patriots will rest quarterback Tom Brady tonight at Washington and will start backup Ryan Mallett instead, a source told the Boston Herald. This will be only the fourth time in Brady's career as the Pats' starter where he'll sit out the team's opening preseason game. Brady is not believed to be injured.

The paper believes that if Mallett looks good this preseason that he could end up being part of a trade.
