Mallett completed six of eight passes for 47 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's preseason game against the Colts.
Joe Flacco (knee) was held out for a second straight week, allowing Mallett to play the first three drives of Saturday's game. No. 3 quarterback Josh Johnson was also reasonably effective, completing 11 of 16 passes for 72 yards and a touchdown, with five carries for another 40 yards. Regardless, there's been no indication that Mallett is in danger of losing the No. 2 quarterback job.
Mallett's play was erratic during the offseason program, The Baltimore Sun reports.
Mallett joined the Ravens in December and ended up starting the final two games, with his performance decent enough to make him the clear favorite for the backup job this season. Despite his reported struggles during OTAs and minicamp, the former third-round selection (2011) remains a heavy favorite to serve as Joe Flacco's top backup, as the Ravens didn't put much effort into finding competition. Jerrod Johnson and Josh Johnson will also get some reps during training camp.
Mallett connected with seven different receivers, targeting Javorius Allen, Maxx Williams and Kamar Aiken each at least 10 times, though Aiken led the team with only 76 receiving yards, while fullback Kyle Juszczyk caught the lone touchdown pass. Mallett was a late-season injury replacement with no guarantee of being in Baltimore next season, and even if he is, it'll be as a backup to Joe Flacco.
Ryan Mallett completed 28 of 41 passes for 274 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's win over the Steelers.
The 27-year-old led the Baltimore Ravens to an improbable victory in his first start for the franchise, leading wire-to-wire versus their division rivals. Despite little to work with in the way of skill players, Mallett made the most of his debut and actually posted the highest yardage total of his five-year career. Mallett figures to start the final game of the season in what could be an audition for 2016, so expect him to get the nod once again against the Bengals on the road.
Ryan Mallett is slated to start Sunday's game against the Steelers.
The Baltimore Ravens will give Mallett a go Sunday, with the team looking to evaluate him as a potential candidate to return next season as Joe Flacco's top backup. While Mallett has a big arm, considering how banged up Baltimore is at the skill positions, he's a very speculative fantasy lineup option in Week 16.
