by Larry Hartstein |

With the Buccaneers drafting running back Charles Sims to pair with Doug Martin, either Bobby Rainey or Mike James "could get caught in a numbers game," reports the Tampa Tribune.

Rainey rushed for 566 yards and five touchdowns last year but averaged 3.8 yards per carry. James ran for 295 yards in nine games, averaging 4.9 yards per carry.

Bucs could rely on multiple running backs
by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer

Buccaneers running back Doug Martin might not be a workhorse for Tampa Bay this season under new offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford, reports the Tampa Bay Times.

Tedford said he believes in alternating running backs, and behind Martin is rookie Charles Sim, Mike James and Bobby Rainey.

"I think you have to alternate," Tedford said Tuesday. "I don’t believe that one back can carry the load. It’s just too physical. I think you probably need to have two to three guys to bring different things to the table. But I think you at least need to have two to be able to spell them here and there and keep them healthy and tat type of thing. That's the goal to try and create some depth right there where there's not a dropoff when one guy comes in and another guy goes out. There's no dropoff. We just keep going."

Martin played in only six games last season before suffering a shoulder injury against Atlanta that eventually landed him on injured reserve. James and Rainey were both productive as replacement backs. Sims, at 6-foot, 214-pounds, is a bigger back who caught more than 200 passes in college.

by Larry Hartstein |

Buccaneers running back Mike James, who broke his left ankle Week 10, did not participate in last week's minicamp but hopes to return for next month's OTAs, reports the team's website. James is running and cutting and is "very close" to being cleared, the report said.

James will compete with Bobby Rainey for the backup job behind Doug Martin.

Bucs to lean on Doug Martin over Mike James, Bobby Rainey
by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer

New Buccaneers coach Lovie Smith plans to lean on running back Doug Martin this season, reports the Tampa Bay Times. Martin is expected to be 100 percent recovered from last year's shoulder injury.

"We're going to lean on one guy, but I like the rotation," Smith said of Martin, Mike James and Bobby Rainey. "I think you have to have a bell cow. He's ours. At the running back position, there are enough reps to go along. We want three guys we feel comfortable with. Two will play, but it's not a rotation that where every series we're going to have a different guy in there."
