Taylor registered a solo tackle and an interception against the Dolphins on Sunday.
Sunday's interception was the first of Taylor's career, as he was able to pick off Ryan Tannehill on the second play of the game. Aside from that, Taylor was quiet, with just one tackle and one pass deflection.
Taylor is listed as the team's starting cornerback, supplanting Tramon Williams, Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reports.
Taylor has been practicing with the starters since last week, but it didn't appear on the team's unofficial depth chart until Monday. Williams, the incumbent cornerback, has been dealing with a toe injury, and that certainly didn't help his chances of keeping his starting spot. Taylor is entering his fourth season as a pro, and 2016 will be his first with Cleveland. The 25-year-old will line up with Joe Haden on a defense that has its share of issues.
Complicating matters is that Williams is currently nursing a toe injury, but it is not expected to be serious. Taylor, on the other hand, has impressed coaches of late with his aggressive play, especially coach Hue Jackson. However, given the timing of Taylor's recent ascension, his place atop the depth chart may ultimately have more to do with the Browns' curiosity in his ability to operate with a starting-caliber unit than anything else; the third preseason game usually serves as a dress rehearsal for most NFL teams in preparation for the regular season. The Browns may simply know what they have in Williams, an eleven-year veteran, and would rather get a deeper grasp of what Taylor brings to the table during the team's final chance to play their best players in the preseason. Ultimately, though, it is Williams who projects to end up as the starting corner opposite Joe Haden come Week 1.
The Cleveland Browns traded a seventh-round draft pick (223rd overall) to the Dolphins in exchange for Jamar Taylor and the 250th pick in the draft, NFL.com reports.
Taylor, who was taken by the Dolphins in the second round of the 2013 draft, will look to re-boot his NFL career after ending up a healthy scratch for three of Miami's last five games this past season. At the very least, he provides the Browns with a player with some untapped ability to boost the team's depth at cornerback.
Taylor just has not performed up to expectation, and at this point the team is willing to try just about anything to bust out of its slump.
