Ware led the Chiefs and proved reasonably effective in the starting role for the club last season. However, he did join the club as a fullback and was an undrafted free agent out of college. The fact that the Chiefs moved up in the draft to select Hunt suggests they were targeting the Toledo product. At the very least, Ware's bruising style could also complement Hunt's elusiveness.
As it stands right now, Ware would sit atop the depth chart and assume a bulk of the workload. Both he and Charcandrick West -- who would serve as the top backup -- were handed contract extensions prior to last season, but that doesn't necessarily exclude the club from adding another running back through free agency or the draft. The Chiefs have already signed veteran C.J. Spiller, but he figures to serve mostly in a depth role and shouldn't eat into Ware's potential allotment of carries.
Ware was efficient on the ground Sunday, topping 4.0 YPC for just the second time in the past six games and scoring one of the game's two lone touchdowns. However, he wasn't able to make anything happen through the air despite tying for the third-most targets on the team. One particularly costly blemish occurred in the first half when Ware dropped a pass on third and seven that forced a Chiefs punt in their own territory. Now entering his first offseason atop the depth chart, fantasy players should keep a close eye on how involved Jamaal Charles (knee) looks to be in the game plan. While Ware looks to have earned the right to remain the lead back, Charles could turn it into a committee if he shows he still has something left in the tank.
Ware, who missed the
Ware was ruled out of Kansas City's Week 17 tilt versus the Chargers due to soreness in his ribs, but in having the past week off thanks to the Chiefs earning a bye to start the postseason, the tailback is anticipated to be back in action come Sunday. At the moment, it's unclear whether Ware will still be included on the team's injury report, but its initial release following Wednesday's practice should provide material for another update on his situation. In Kansas City's prior meeting with the Steelers this season, Ware rushed 13 times for 82 yards and caught one pass for 14 yards, but he also lost a fumble as the Chiefs were defeated by nearly 30 points.
