Louis Nix was waived by the New York Giants on Saturday, Ebenezer Samuel of the New York Daily News reports.
The Giants waved Nix in order to make room for defensive back Tramain Jacobs, who was promoted from the practice squad after Leon McFadden was officially ruled out for Sunday's game. Nix never recorded a snap with the Giants in 2015 and will now be subject to the NFL's waiver system. He could opt to rejoin the team at another point in the season if he passes through waivers unclaimed.
"A lot went on my first year here. It was a lot to deal with," said Nix, who underwent arthroscopic knee surgery during the preseason and eventually was placed on season-ending injured reserve. "It was difficult to maintain it with all the issues. But I'm happy about now, and that's what I'm worried about. I'm just trying to move forward and do the best I can."
Coach Bill O'Brien expressed frustration with Nix earlier this offseason.
"Bill is Bill. He challenges everybody," Nix said. "Sometimes you guys make it more than what it is. … He wants guys to be better. I take no offense to it. I know he just wants me to be the best player that I can be. He sees potential, and I see it in myself. I'm starting to get back in a groove of things. I'm just going to keep trying to do the best I can."
Nix is finally healthy and working his way into game shape.
"Make it through a practice, man," Nix said. "That's my goal."
After praising rookies Jadeveon Clowney and Xavier Su'a-Filo for the work ethic they've shown while rehabbing from injuries, O'Brien was asked about Nix's offseason rehab work.
"I have not seen Louis Nix," O'Brien said, per ESPN. "I don't know. He’s working out somewhere in Florida I guess. Haven’t seen him."
O'Brien added a caveat, saying, "That’s their prerogative, so don’t read anything into that. When they show back up here for the offseason program, especially the younger players, the younger players need to be ready to roll. So hopefully he’s ready to go."
When asked what changes he'd like to see in Nix, O'Brien landed another shot. ""I would say the ability to make it through a practice," O'Brien said. "That would be the biggest thing I need to see."
