Bernard rushed for eight yards on five carries in Sunday's loss to Denver. He added 36 yards receiving on five catches.
With the Bengals unveiling a run-heavy approach to start the game, it was Jeremy Hill getting the lion' share of the looks after the two both collected 14 touches in Week 2. Bernard collected more touches than Hill in six of the first nine games of 2015, but hasn't done so since. Don't expect that to change anytime soon, though Bernard still holds the very valuable role as arguably being the team's second most reliable receiver outside of A.J. Green.
Bernard led his team in receptions, receiving yards and targets while scoring the only Cincinnati touchdown of the day. His receiving total represented the second 100-yard game of his career, and served as a reminder of Bernard's effectiveness in PPR settings. He may be in for similar usage in the passing game next week as well when the Bengals host the Denver Broncos.
This was a disappointing effort for Cincinnati's receiving back, given that quarterback Andy Dalton threw for 366 yards while New York's defense unsurprisingly bottled up the run. Powerful complement Jeremy Hill out-touched Bernard nine to seven and converted at the goal line to establish his stranglehold on that role. Bernard will likely be inconsistent for as long as Hill remains healthy and effective.
Bernard had three carries for 27 yards and two receptions for 25 yards and a touchdown (on two targets) in Sunday's preseason game against Jacksonville.
Bernard split first-team work with Jeremy Hill, who had eight carries for 21 yards and a touchdown and 28 yards on his only reception. Even with Hill getting the early-down work and goal-line carries, Bernard managed five touches on only three drives. If Tyler Eifert (ankle) misses time at the beginning of the season, Bernard could pick up some extra targets in the short passing game.
Bernard turned seven carries into a team-high 21 rushing yards while hauling in his lone target for six yards in Friday's preseason debut against the Vikings.
Bernard should once again serve as the more elusive complement to Jeremy Hill's power running style, with both seeing the ball quite a bit for a balanced Bengals offense. He outperformed Hill in this particular outing, but both have pretty defined roles heading into the regular season.
