Don't count out Vick Ballard in Colts' backfield competition
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com

All signs point to Colts running back Vick Ballard being ready for training camp, reports ESPN.com. Ballard tore his ACL in Week 2 last season, making a cut in practice.

The website says Ballard won't necessarily be the No. 3 back behind Trent Richardson and Ahmad Bradshaw, noting Richardson flopped last year and Bradshaw (neck) needs to prove he can stay healthy.

Ballard ran for 814 yards and two touchdowns as a rookie in 2012.

Pagano breaks down Colts' backfield
by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer

Colts coach Chuck Pagano said Tuesday at the NFL owners meetings that he's looking forward to the competition at running back between Trent Richardson, Ahmad Bradshaw and Vick Ballard .

"It’s going to be great competition, I know that," Pagano said. "Certainly with Trent, Ahmad and Vick coming back. It’s a good problem that we have. It’s going to create great competition at the position."

Pagano said the health for Bradshaw (neck) and Ballard (ACL) will determine their usage early on this season. Both finished last year on injured reserve.

"We know what Trent is capable of doing," Pagano said. "Trent is going to be so much better in our second season with us. Just having an offseason, knowing the offense and feeling more comfortable and knowing the pieces around him and having chemistry with our offensive line. There’s going to be great competition there. You have to have one guy you call your bell cow, who is going to get the lion's share of the snaps. We have a lot of options there. It's good to have multiple backs."

Pagano said bringing back Bradshaw was a no-brainer.

"You watched him play," Pagano said. "The guy is a warrior, he's a fierce, fierce competitor and I knew once he got the diagnosis, knew what he had to go through from a rehab standpoint that there was no question once the doctor said you're going to be fine he'd come back. That's in his DNA. He doesn't know anything else. He doesn't want to do anything else."

Who will start for Colts at running back?
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com

It remains unclear who will start at running back for the Colts, and the question could stay unanswered until Week 1, reports ESPN.com. Trent Richardson is coming back from a shoulder cleanup, Vick Ballard is returning from a torn ACL, and Donald Brown is headed to free agency.

General manager Ryan Grigson is in no rush to provide the answer.

“At any point in time you'll know how we do things with the Colts, it's the best players play,” he told the website. “Iron sharp as iron. We're going to try to have the most competition at each position group and whoever wins that spot is going to be the starter and it's who is going to get us to that next level, which is Super Bowl XLIX and that's the mindset. You're either all in or all out."

Vick Ballard talks about lost 2013 season
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

Colts running back Vick Ballard will try in 2014 to bounce back from what he describes as a traumatic experience.

Ballard was excited after the season opener, during which he helped his team to a victory over the Raiders by rushing for 63 yards on 12 carries. He was coming off a 2012 season in which he served as the featured back and performed well.

Four days later, his season was over. Ballard blew out his knee in practice the week after that game and was done.

"It was like my world got turned upside down," he told the team website. "At one moment I was on top of the world, then, boom. It was definitely a blow."
