Robinson has largely been considered a disappointment for the Rams since being taken with the second pick of the 2014 NFL Draft. After declining his fifth-year option in May, the Rams decided they wanted to at least get some sort of value out of him and will trade him to the Lions for a conditional pick. In Detroit, Robinson will compete for rights to the top left tackle job, as former starter Taylor Decker is slated to miss at least four months while recovering from a shoulder injury.
Robinson did not have his fifth-year option exercised by the Rams, Albert Beer of TheMMQB.com reports.
The offensive tackle will now become a free agent after the 2017 season. With the signing of veteran Andrew Whitworth, Robinson will likely be moving to right tackle this season. It is shaping up to be a "prove-it" year for Robinson, who hasn't necessarily lived up to the hype of being the second-overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.
Head coach Jeff Fisher said Robinson (not injury related) will be "ready to roll" this week against the Patriots, Rich Hammond of the Orange County Register reports.
Robinson was a healthy scratch last Sunday against the Saints because Fisher said "he needed a break". Thus, it appears his benching was merely a motivational tactic.
The reason for the decision to sideline Robinson remains relatively unknown, but look for more updates to come after the game. In his absence, expect either Pace Murphy or Rodger Saffold to get the start at left tackle.
