Richardson has been suspended for Week 1's matchup with the Bengals after violating the NFL Personal Conduct Policy, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Richardson will be eligible to return to the active roster the Monday after Week 1 concludes. In January the defensive lineman pleaded guilty to resisting arrest following a road race incident that took place last July. As a Pro Bowler and former Defensive Rookie of the Year, Richardson plays an instrumental role in the Jets' hard-nosed defense but in his absence the team will likely turn to Leonard Williams and Jarvis Jenkins to carry more of a workload.
Richardson's fifth-year option is worth about $8 million for the 2017 season, which will mark the final year of his rookie contract. For a player with Richardson's ability, that evaluation is certainly a sound value for the Jets, but his off-field issues make his availability less certain. After being suspended for the first four games of last season, Richardson could very well begin this term with another suspension, as he recently pleaded guilty to resisting arrest, speeding, and running a red light in an incident that took place last July. Through 43 career games played, Richardson has impressively accumulated 179 total tackles and 16.5 sacks, making him a prime candidate for a long-term extension, should he straighten out his act going forward.
Sheldon Richardson pleaded guilty Tuesday to resisting arrest, speeding and running a red light in an incident that took place in July, ESPN New York's Rich Cimini reports.
Shortly after it was discovered that he'd be suspended for the first four games of the 2015 season for violating the NFL's policy on substances of abuse, Richardson was arrested for taking part in a high-speed race in St. Louis. He may open the season with a suspension for a second straight year, but he'll likely escape with a ban that lasts fewer than four games. Richardson will be playing for a new contract in 2016, after notching five sacks in 11 appearances during the 2015 season.
Sheldon Richardson recorded six tackles Sunday against the Bills.
In the third year of a four-year contract with the New York Jets , Richardson recorded five sacks in 11 games played. He'll be plenty motivated to be highly-productive next year, as he'll be playing for a new contract in 2017. His performance this year will make him a risky draft choice in fantasy leagues next year. However, he did have and eight sack season in 2014, so he clearly has plenty of upside potential.
Sheldon Richardson recorded a sack and two tackles Sunday against the Patriots.
The New York Jets struggled to get to Tom Brady, but Richardson was able to record one of the team's two sacks in their victory against the Patriots. He now has recorded at least half a sack in seven different games this season.
