Jairus Byrd on schedule, should be in camp on-time
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer

Saints safety Jairus Byrd is expected to be ready for the start of training camp this week, a source tells ESPN. Byrd is rehabbing from offseason back surgery and could be limited at first. There's even a chance the Saints take a cautious approach with him and give him plenty of time to recover before the start of the season.

After signing a six-year, $54 million deal with the Saints this offseason, Byrd missed all of his new team's OTAs and minicamps. The team thought it was best for Byrd's long-term health to get the "minor surgery" done and over with so it wouldn't impact him this season.

Lewis registered 47 tackles, on forced fumble and four interceptions in his first season with the Saints in 2013.

Saints lock up Jairus Byrd long term

Though they have little room under the cap, the Saints somehow managed to find room for one of the best free agent defenders available. A few hours after free agency opened Tuesday, the team announced the signing of safety Jairus Byrd, the financial terms of which are not yet known.

Byrd has made the Pro Bowl three times in his five-year career, and is coming off a four-interception, 48-tackle season despite playing just 11 games for the Bills last season.
