The veteran safety finished off the season in fine fashion, racking up 40 tackles (30 solo) over the final four games. Tandy also racked up four picks over the last five contests of the season, victimizing Cam Newton twice on Sunday and posting a career-best figure in that category overall in 2016. Despite having set a then-career high in tackles in 2015, Tandy's re-signing in March 2016 was primarily for depth purposes, as well as his solid special teams work. However, given his play in the latter stages of the campaign, the fifth-year pro figures to be heavily in the mix for a potential starting safety spot in 2017, the second year of his two-year, $1.85 million contract.
Tandy tallied 14 tackles (nine solo) in Sunday's 26-20 loss to the Cowboys.
Despite Chris Conte's return, Tandy saw plenty of playing time and ended up checking in second only to Kwon Alexander's remarkable 21 stops on the night. The veteran safety has played at an outstanding level over the last two weeks, amassing a combined 23 tackles, a tackle for loss and an interception over that span.
Stepping in once again for Chris Conte (chest), Tandy came through at a crucial juncture for the second consecutive week. He adeptly cut in front of a Drew Brees pass intended for Willie Snead at the Saints' 47-yard line with 57 seconds remaining, sealing the Bucs' fifth straight win. The tackles were a season high for the fifth-year veteran, who was a key part of a defensive effort that limited Brees to 6.3 yards per attempt and the formidable running back duo of Tim Hightower and Mark Ingram to 45 yards rushing on 13 carries. Even if Conte is unable to return in time for the Week 15 battle against the Cowboys, the free safety position appears to be in very good hands, given Tandy's body of work the last two games.
Filling in for the sidelined Chris Conte (chest), Tandy turned in a game-saving pick when he picked off Philip Rivers at the Bucs' two-yard line with 3:04 remaining and Tampa protecting a 28-21 lead, jumping a route he anticipated based on his film study this past week. It was the fifth-year safety's fifth career interception and first of 2016, as he's spent the season backing up Conte. Tandy's stay in the starting lineup could be short-lived, however, as Conte could return for a Week 14 tilt against the Saints.
Tandy missed some practice time throughout the week due to a calf injury before being officially ruled questionable for Monday's game. He figures to take on his usual role providing depth in the team's secondary.
