Head coach Kyle Shanahan said that he has "been a fan of [Celek] throughout his career," which bodes well for the tight end's chances of making the 53-man roster as the 49ers head towards training camp, Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee reports.
Celek's toughness and blocking ability fits the mold of Shanahan's past tight ends. It helps that the 29-year-old took a step forward offensively last season with 350 yards and three touchdowns on 29 receptions, but he has more real football value to the 49ers than he does as a receiver for fantasy. Celek will compete with a handful of candidates during training camp for a spot in Shanahan's offense.
Celek hauled in his only target for a nine-yard touchdown in Sunday's loss to Seattle.
Celek set career-highs in receptions (28) and yards (341) while tying last year's mark of three touchdowns with Sunday's score. He boasts great run blocking skills and sure hands, but lacks the athleticism of fellow tight end Vance McDonald that translates to fantasy production. Both tight ends were signed to extensions in 2016, so they should begin next season as the team's one-two punch yet again.
As expected, Celek was the next man up to start in place of the injured Vance McDonald (shoulder). His pedestrian fantasy day was just as expected. He will get another start against the Seahawks next week, but he would need to find pay dirt to outperform his lowly projections against one of the stingiest defenses against opposing tight ends.
Celek had two receptions on six targets for 22 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 41-13 loss at Atlanta.
Celek, starting at TE for an injured Vance McDonald (shoulder), scored on a pretty 16-yard touchdown in the second quarter. He was held in check otherwise, as Colin Kaepernick struggled to generate much offense in the second half. He'll take on the Rams next week.
With Vance McDonald done for the year,
News broke this week of McDonald's season-ending injury, opening up playing time for Celek in a tasty matchup with the Falcons. Atlanta currently gives up the fifth-most fantasy points to opposing tight ends and will likely get up early on San Francisco, forcing the Niners to throw early and often. That said, Celek is not a must-start tight end due to his limitations as a receiver, but you could certainly do worse in deep leagues.
