Tucker took a hard stance by saying he wouldn't re-sign with Baltimore if no long-term deal was reached by Friday's deadline, and the Ravens responded by giving him the most money guaranteed to a kicker in NFL history. At 26 years old, Tucker has converted nearly 88 percent of his field goal attempts and has never missed an extra point across four seasons, emerging as one of the league's best kickers since entering the league.
Justin Tucker officially received the franchise tag from the Baltimore Ravens on Friday morning, Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com reports.
Tucker will make $4.5 million next season after he and the Ravens could not make ends meet on a long-term deal. Tucker, who knocked through 33 field goals last season, is becoming one of the standout kickers in the league and has proven to be a valuable fantasy pickup.
Baltimore Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said Justin Tucker will receive the franchise tag if a long-term contract isn't worked out by March 1,
Newsome is just stating the obvious, as Baltimore doesn't have other strong candidates for the franchise tag, which only costs around $4.5 million for kickers. Given that he arguably has the NFL's best combination of leg strength and accuracy, Tucker will likely expect a contract that matches or surpasses Stephen Gostkowski's record-setting four-year, $17.2 million deal from last offseason. Tucker has proven to be a valuable fantasy commodity, despite mostly being attached to unspectacular offenses. He's very accurate and gets a ton of opportunities from 50+ yards.
Justin Tucker made 33 of his 40 field-goal attempts (82.5 percent) and all 29 of his extra-point tries during the 2015 season.
Six of his misses came from 50-plus yards, with the other coming from 40-49. Tucker can become an unrestricted free agent in March, and he has a very strong case to become the highest-paid kicker in NFL history. However, the Baltimore Ravens may opt to use the franchise tag, which would make Tucker a very nice bargain, at least for 2016. The most likely scenario features the Ravens using the franchise tag, then using it as leverage to negotiate a long-term contract. Tucker has proven to be a top-notch fantasy kicker, even when the Baltimore offense is mediocre.
Justin Tucker made two of his three field-goal attempts and kicked one extra point in Sunday's 15-13 loss to the Dolphins.
Tucker has converted a career-worst 78.8 percent of his field-goal attempts this season, but six of his seven misses have come from beyond 50 yards. He's still one of the better options at his position, as Baltimore's willingness to let him try long kicks allows for the kind of volume that's typically reserved for kickers attached to potent offenses. However, the Baltimore Ravens may find even field-goal attempts tough to come by in a Week 14 matchup with the Seahawks.
