Giants still plan committee approach at running back
by Larry Hartstein |

Despite the likely loss of David Wilson to a neck injury, Giants coach Tom Couglin indicated he'll use a running back-by-committee approach. Rashad Jennings is the starter, with rookie Andre Williams, veteran Peyton Hills and Michael Cox and Kendall Gaskins also in the mix.

"I think we have some talented guys at that spot," Coughlin told The Star-Ledger on Thursday. "I think Rashad has done well. I think the young kid (Williams) has come along the more we have given him to do. Michael Cox has had his spots.

"Gaskins did some pretty good things today. We’ll let this thing play out. It’ll be some kind of combination of people involved. They’ll have plenty of opportunities in the preseason to show us what they can do and where they fit."

Giants get offensive contributions
by Igor Mello |

A few Giants made small offensive contributions Week 15. Louis Murphy caught both of his targets for 10 yards. Michael Cox had two carries for 1 yard, while Bear Pascoe rushed for two yards on one carry and caught one of his two targets for 7 yards.

The Giants will end the season at home against Washington.

Giants coach has 'set plan' for running backs Week 10
by Michael Hurcomb |

With running backs Brandon Jacobs (hamstring) and Andre Brown (leg) expected to join the mix for playing time Week 10 vs. Oakland, the Giants are going to have a crowded backfield, which has featured Peyton Hillis and Michael Cox in recent weeks. Giants coach Tom Coughlin has an idea on how he will use his running backs, but he's not telling.

“There will be a set plan,” Coughlin said Wednesday.

The Star-Ledger expects Hillis to be the primary back Sunday, with Jacobs and Brown being sprinkled into the running game. Brown, who has been out all season, is the real wild card.

Brown said there will be a special package of plays installed for him, but it doesn't appear Coughlin is ready to give Brown a heavy workload in his first game back.

"He’s ready to help," Coughlin said. "But there is a big difference between game day and practice. All I think about is how he played a year ago. I’m looking forward to the return of that player, quite frankly."

Michael Cox does little Week 8 despite drawing start
by Michael Hurcomb |

Giants running back Michael Cox drew the start Week 8 at Philadelphia, but he was once again surpassed as the leading rusher by Peyton Hillis during a 15-7 win. Cox finished with nine carries for 19 yards, while adding one catch for 11 yards.

Cox received the first two carries of the game, but he totaled zero yards. He had four carries for 11 yards after the first two drives and had seven carries for 18 yards by halftime. But Hills was the more effective runner in the first half, totaling eight carries for 35 yards, so he got more work in the second half. Hillis finished with 70 yards on 20 carries.

The Giants are on a bye Week 9. When they return to action Week 10 vs. Oakland, running backs Brandon Jacobs (hamstring), David Wilson (neck) and Andre Brown (leg) could all be back from injuries, which would likely mean Cox slides down the depth chart again.

Michael Cox gets a lot of work
by Larry Hartstein |

Cox, who shared backfield duties with Peyton Hillis, visits the Eagles in Week 8.
