Brent Grimes not expected to get franchise tag
by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer

The Dolphins have to decide Monday if they want to place the franchise tag on cornerback Brent Grimes or let him become a free agent, reports ESPN.

The report says the Dolphins can use the one-year franchise tag before the afternoon deadline at $11.5 million. Or they can attempt to sign him to a long-term extension before he hits the open market.

According to Pro Football Talk, Grimes is not expected to get the franchise tag, but he is likely to stay with the Dolphins on a long-term deal.

Brent Grimes 'pretty optimistic' about long-term deal
by Larry Hartstein |

Cornerback Brent Grimes said he's "pretty optimistic" he'll reach a contract agreement with the Dolphins before the franchise tag deadline a week away, reports the Miami Herald.

“They said they like me here and want to have me back," Grimes told the paper. "Hopefully, it happens sooner than later, and I don’t have to worry about it.” Grimes said the team has not discussed slapping him with the tag, and "nobody wants to get franchise tag, another one-year deal.”

Even if a player is tagged, the sides can negotiate a contract and get the tag lifted by mid-July.

Franchise tag becoming more likely for Brent Grimes
by Larry Hartstein |

Each day that goes by without the Dolphins and corner Brent Grimes reaching a contract agreement, "the more likely it is that Grimes get 'tagged,'" reports Miami has a week to decide if it will slap the franchise tag on Grimes for the 2014 season.

Grimes was the team's most consisent defender last year, and the Dolphins have the resources to keep him for at least one more season, the report said. Grimes often shadowed the opponent's top wideout and tied for the team lead with four interceptions.
