Freese missed both of his field-goal attempts Sunday against the Panthers and has missed three field goals in his first two games.
He will look to rebound in Week 3 against the Packers.
Freese hooked his first field goal attempt -- a 42-yard shot -- wide right. He bounced back with kicks from 28 and 27 yards in the third quarter. He finished 2 for 3 in field goal attempt and converted all three of his extra points.
"Obviously it was a tough competition, it was a very, very difficult decision and Giorgio (Tavecchio) did a nice job," Caldwell said. "I think both guys took this thing on in a professional manner and Nate ended up edging him out. I think they are both very capable guys but as we look at all the factors, Nate was the best one for us at this time."
Freese was able to make a 55-yard field goal attempt off the dirt at O.co Coliseum in the second preseason game, and it was a kick that helped the rookie kicker stand out in the competition.
Tavecchio has the stronger leg. Freese is likely the more accurate kicker and, due to having a draft pick invested, would appear to be the favorite.
