Pennel was released by the Packers in January after serving two four-game suspensions for violating the league's substance abuse policy. He totaled 40 tackles, including one sack, in 37 games with Green Bay over the past three seasons. He'll look to secure a role as a depth defensive lineman with the Jets in 2017.
Pennel served two separate four-game suspensions this season, and after completing his latest punishment, he needed to be activated Monday in order to suit up during the playoffs. However, the Packers declined that option by instead releasing him from their roster. In 37 games with Green Bay since 2014, Pennel totaled 40 tackles and one sack.
Pennel settled his appeal for violating the league's substance-abuse policy and will begin a four-game suspension, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Pennel was originally facing a year-long suspension, which would have kept him out for the rest of this season as well as the majority of the 2017 season. Now that is has been reduced to four games, the defensive tackle would be eligible to return during the playoffs, should the Packers make it that far.
Pennel was suspended for four games after violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. A roster spot was cleared for him after the team released Brian Price. It's unclear how much of a role Pennel will have Sunday, though he'll likely slide in for a few snaps at a minimum.
