Clay (foot) signed a one-year contract with the Panthers, Bryan Strickland of the team's official website reports.
A 2015 sixth-round pick, Clay was released by Tampa Bay at the end of his first training camp, and then caught on with the Ravens as a return specialist for the final seven weeks of his rookie season. He was in the mix to earn the same role last summer, but the Ravens released him with an injury settlement after he suffered a broken foot during training camp. While unlikely to make an impact on offense, Clay is a candidate to replace Tedd Ginn (Saints) as Carolina's primary return man.
Per the NFL's official transaction report,
Clay sustained a broken foot during training camp and has resided on Baltimore's IR since. Once healthy, he could sign with a team in need of a return man.
Clay suffered a foot injury during practice Saturday, but the nature of which was previously undisclosed. However, he was considered lost for the season from the start, which is why he was released with an injury designation Monday.
Clay, who was expected to be the Ravens' primary returner this season, muffed a punt during Baltimore's preseason opener Thursday, before suffering a foot injury in practice Saturday. What's more, Clay's foot injury will sideline him for the upcoming season, ending his campaign after one disappointing preseason showing. With Clay gone, the Ravens could try Michael Campanaro and Keenan Reynolds out as returners.
