Ravens' Steve Smith: Dealing with rare double rupture
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith (Achilles) suffered a rare double rupture of his right Achilles, and the muscle surrounding his tendon is still significantly atrophied, according to Dan Pompei of the Bleacher Report.

The latest report sheds light on Smith's rehab process, which has apparently been even more grueling than expected due to the extreme nature of his torn Achilles. Dr. Robert Anderson, one of the leading orthopedic surgeons for professional athletes, told Smith it was the first time he had ever seen a double Achilles rupture. Already facing an uphill climb, Smith figures to miss most or all of training camp, leaving him on the doubtful side of questionable for the start of the season. He still needs time to build his leg back to strength before he can even think about resuming normal workouts with his teammates. A mid-season return in a part-time role seems like a realistic target for the 37-year-old wideout.

Ravens' Steve Smith: Will begin training camp on PUP
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith (Achilles) will start training camp on the PUP list, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports.

This is an unsurprising move as it has already been announced that the veteran Smith would not be playing in the preseason. He suffered his Achilles injury on Nov. 1, and was not able to participate in any offseason workouts. His role with the team this season remains uncertain until he is able to display he has recovered from the serious injury. However, the Ravens have relatively thin depth in their receiving department, so he will have plenty of opportunity to produce if he can get healthy.

Ravens' Steve Smith: Won't play in preseason
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith (Achilles) will not play in the preseason, reports. "I've been very comfortable throughout my career not playing in the preseason," Smith said Wednesday. "So, I don't have a problem with that. [it's] just four games that don't count and the liability of injury. At the senior-citizen age that I am, I think staying out would be good."

Although Smith isn't worried about missing the preseason, he did say just a few days ago that he'll need to get some work in at training camp if he's going to be ready by Week 1. Recovering from a torn Achilles suffered Nov. 1, the 37-year-old wideout hasn't taken part in any offseason workouts and doesn't seem to have much chance of being ready for the start of training camp. He still hopes to be available at the start of the season, and his presence (or lack thereof) may be even more important than expected, as Breshad Perriman (knee) now faces a potentially-lengthy rehab process of his own. Of course, there's no guarantee Smith will be productive if he's available, given his age and the serious nature of his injury.

Ravens' Steve Smith: Not sure when he'll be ready
by RotoWire Staff | Special to

Smith (torn Achilles) said he isn't sure when he will be available, adding that he probably can't play in Week 1 unless he gets in some work at training camp, reports. "I don't know when I'm coming back," he said. "I just know I have to be able to do something in training camp to be able to play for the season. That's just the way I operate. I can't go from doing absolutely nothing [and] sitting on my butt for all of training camp and then go out there and play."

Still recovering from a torn Achilles suffered Nov. 1, the 37-year-old Smith has progressed to jogging but seemingly still has quite a ways to go. While doubtful to be ready for the start of camp in late July, he might be available at some point in August, which would give him a few weeks to prepare for the start of the season. Even if he's available, there's no assurance Smith will look like the same player we saw last year, as Achilles' ruptures often sap players of their explosiveness for quite some time after the injury is healed. Meanwhile, the Ravens got some good news Tuesday when it was announced that fellow wideout Breshad Perriman (knee) should be able to rehab his partially torn ACL without reconstructive surgery. Still, Perriman and Smith should both be considered questionable for Week 1, possibly leaving Kamar Aiken, Mike Wallace and others to carry a heavier burden than might have otherwise been expected.

Ravens' Steve Smith: Seems to be on track
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith (Achilles) seems to be on track in his recovery, The Baltimore Sun reports.

There aren't any concrete details, as neither Smith nor his team has commented on the injury in recent weeks. He'll presumably miss a good chunk (or all) of training camp and the preseason, yet hopes to be on the field when the Ravens face the Bills in Week 1. Prospective owners should keep in mind that Smith will only be 10 months removed from a torn Achilles, an injury that often saps players of their effectiveness for quite some time after they're able to play in games. Teammate Terrell Suggs and Raiders wideout Michael Crabtree are among the most notable examples of players that made quick recoveries from torn Achilles tendons, only to discover that they were shells of their usual selves upon first returning. It's also worth noting that the Ravens significantly improved the depth of their receiving corps, after heavily relying on Smith for the first half of last season, and then turning to Kamar Aiken down the stretch. Aiken, Breshad Perriman and Mike Wallace are all expected to have significant roles.
