Goodell starting to consider Vick case: Commissioner Roger Goodell says he is beginning to focus on evaluating Michael Vick's future in the NFL. But Goodell said Thursday his decision on the former Falcons star quarterback will come "in due time" and not necessarily before the season begins. Goodell says he has yet to speak to Vick, and won't sit down with him until after Vick is released July 20 from home confinement and federal custody. "I haven't given a timeline," on a decision about reinstatement, Goodell told The Associated Press during a telephone interview. Vick is currently suspended from the league because of his involvement in a dogfighting ring. He is finishing up his sentence in his Virginia home on house arrest.

Fantasy Analysis

Vick was the figurehead for the Falcons and, as a dual-threat quarterback, was one of the NFL's most dynamic stars from 2001-2006 before his sudden downfall. As he begins to get back into football shape, the door is open for him to start receiving feelers from other NFL teams (and non-NFL teams like those in the UFL and CFL) about playing again. Suffice to say, it will be interesting to see how Goodell handles Vick once his formal prison term is over in late July. Expecting him to return to form as a threatening starting quarterback in the NFL this season is way too unrealistic. If you're even thinking about drafting him, do it with a very late-round pick in the deepest of leagues this summer. He's a long way from being a legit Fantasy option.

QB Michael Vick was officially released by the Falcons. The move will cause a $7.11 million salary cap hit for the team, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Vickis a free agent, but has yet to be cleared to return to the NFL. If that should happen, Vick will have to look beyond San Francisco for employment. General manager Scot McCloughan finally put an end to speculation quarterbackl Vick might resume his playing career with the 49ers. Appearing on Sirius NFL Radio, McCloughan ruled out the possibility of Vick joining the 49ers -- if and when he is cleared to play in the NFL after serving a prison sentence on dog-fighting charges. "Coach (Mike Singletary) and I have sat down," McCloughan said. "We sat down and talked last week. We had an off-week of OTAs and we discussed about Michael Vick, and we're not going to go that route. We will not do it." 61/2/2009
