Kampman unhappy with OLB switch?: Aaron Kampman's silence might indicate some level of discomfort with the team's decision to switch defensive schemes, a move that will turn one of the league's best pass rushing defensive ends into an outside linebacker in the team's new base 3-4 alignment. Kampman was present for Thursday's voluntary Organized Team Activity but did not appear in the locker room while it was open to the media. A team spokesman said Kampman originally planned to address reporters Thursday but changed his mind despite being encouraged to speak by the team's public relations staff. Packers coach Mike McCarthy seemed to acknowledge Thursday that Kampman has some reservations. "I think this defense is going to help Aaron Kampman," McCarthy said. "I think there is always a hesitancy when you are asked to do something different. Aaron was very comfortable in the old scheme, but I think this is going to create more opportunities for him."

Fantasy Analysis

Kampman will have to learn how to rush the passer from a standing position - as opposed to the three-point stance at defensive end, with his hand on the ground. He'll sometimes drop into pass coverage, a staple of the 3-4 scheme intended to confuse offenses. Moving to outside linebacker, his tackle totals should improve a little bit but his sack totals will take a dive (he had 37 over his last three seasons). You can now consider Kampman a No. 3 Fantasy LB worth a late-round pick in drafts this summer.

LB Aaron Kampman went through an offseason that, on the surface, appeared trying for the Pro Bowl defensive end as he made the conversion to outside linebacker in the team's new 3-4 defensive scheme. The offseason ended on a more difficult note for Kampman on a personal level. He was informed by head coach Mike McCarthy shortly before the Packers' final minicamp practice June 24 that Kampman's legendary high school football coach, Ed Thomas, was killed earlier that morning. Thomas, who won nearly 300 games in 37 years of coaching at Aplington-Parkersburg (Iowa) High School and had four players go on to the NFL, was shot to death while supervising a workout in the school's weight room.
