McMichael ready for rebound: The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports Rams TE Randy McMichael is ready to play a bigger role this year after two disappointing seasons with the team. A prolific pass-catcher in Miami, where he averaged 56 receptions and 619 yards over five seasons, McMichael spent the bulk of his first year with the Rams blocking because of injuries to the offensive line. He finished with just 39 catches and 429 yards in 2007 after arriving here as a free agent. He was on pace last year to reprise his Dolphins numbers when he suffered a broken bone in his lower right leg in Week 4 vs. Buffalo. A healthy McMichael figures to be a key component in the West Coast-style offense that new coordinator Pat Shurmur is installing, first-year coach Steve Spagnuolo pointed out.

Fantasy Analysis

After the releases of Torry Holt and Drew Bennett, the Rams' corps of wide receivers is young and largely inexperienced. That means that McMichael could be an even more frequent target for QB Marc Bulger. McMichael is never going to be an elite Fantasy TE, but he can be a serviceable No. 2 option and bye-week replacement. Don't plan on drafting McMichael in any leagues, but he is worth adding off the waiver wire during the year if he can stay healthy and start playing like he did two years ago.

TE Randy McMichael, who missed 12 games last season because of a foot injury, is not only happy to be healthy, but enthused about the West Coast offense being implemented by offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, Said McMichael, "The tight end in this (offense) is very important. I remember a few years ago, I was sitting down with (Falcons tight end) Tony Gonzalez and he always told me, he said the West Coast would probably be the best offense that a tight end could be in. I didn't really realize that until I got here with what coach Shurmur has put in, and it's a great offense for a tight end. There are so many throws underneath. Everybody knows that the West Coast offense is get the ball out of your hands fast and get the ball to your playmakers and let them do what they do. That's basically what this is and I'm just really excited to be a part of it." Last season, there were eight NFL teams that had someone other than a wide receiver lead the team in receptions. Seven of those were tight ends, and the eighth was Bears running back Matt Forte, who had 63 receptions to tight end Greg Olsen's 54.
