  • P Jeff Feagles, whose reconsidering of his decision to return for a 23rd NFL season led to the Giants selecting P Matt Dodge of East Carolina in the seventh round of the NFL Draft, made it official that he is indeed leaving the game. Feagles, who signed a one-year, $900K contact to return, began to first have doubts as recently as last week, when after putting himself through rigorous training he began to experience some physical issues. He visited with head coach Tom Coughlin prior to the draft to advise the coach of his having second doubts about his decision to return. Coughlin told reporters after the draft that their selection of Dodge was done as protection in case Feagles did decide to call it a career. Feagles, whose first NFL season was in 1988 as a member of New England, came to the Giants as a free agent in 2003. He has never missed a game in his career, playing in a record-setting 352 consecutive games. He also holds the NFL record with 1,713 punts. With Feagles gone, Dodge will compete against Jy Bond, the former Australian Rules kicker for the job."If Jeff is not in the mix, we will try to groom these guys to get us ready for our season," said General Manager Jerry Reese following the draft after advising reporters of Feagles' uncertainty to return.
