Palmer will wait to make a decision on his playing status until the conclusion of the 2017 campaign, Chris Wesseling of NFL.com reports. "I love every facet of [of the game]," Palmer said. "I don't want to stop. But I'll have to wait and make that decision after the season."
Palmer again considered retirement after the Cardinals fell short of expectations last season, but his decision may have been made easier when veteran wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald opted to return. Additionally, the Cardinals' success prior to a 7-8-1 finish in 2016 likely factored into the call, as the combo of Palmer and Bruce Arians rung up double-digit wins in each of their first three years together. Although Palmer's age (37) and cluttered medical chart should make potential owners wary, he'll again be working under a head coach unafraid to take chances and with receiving talent (Fitzgerald, David Johnson, John Brown, J.J. Nelson and Jermaine Gresham) that would make many signal-callers jealous.
Palmer participated in on-field workouts Tuesday and is expected to do the same Wednesday, Bob McManaman of The Arizona Republic reports. "We'll see how he feels two days in a row," head coach Bruce Arians said. "Whether he goes Thursday or Friday, we'll see. But he looked really sharp."
With his age (37) in mind, the Cardinals have directed Palmer to hold off on throwing much, if at all, this offseason, but the veteran has worked his way into OTAs over the last two weeks. During a full-speed session last Thursday, he tossed some passes, which he replicated Tuesday. After throwing back-to-back days this week, the Cardinals will learn how he's holding up under his current restrictions, at which point a decision may be made too allow him to keep it up during the final two days of OTAs and/or next week in mandatory minicamp. No matter his upcoming activity level, Palmer is gearing up for his 15th season overall and fifth in Arizona, where he's put up at least 4,000 yards and 24 touchdowns in the three campaigns in which he played at least 15 games.
Palmer considered retirement after what he described as the most physically grueling season of his career. His numbers dipped from 2015 to 2016 but he was still an above average quarterback in what was his age-36 season. He'll look to rebound in 2017 from his 26-touchdown, 14-interception, 14-fumble performance in 2016.
Palmer was reportedly considering retirement after completing what's been described as the most physically grueling campaign of his career, but after news of top wideout Larry Fitzgerald's decision to keep playing, it appears the 37-year-old Palmer will return for his 15th year in the league. After missing one game due to a concussion and dealing with a hamstring issue as well, Palmer finished this past season with 4,233 passing yards, 26 touchdowns, 14 interceptions and 14 fumbles. Those numbers paled in comparison to Palmer's near-MVP 2015 campaign, so assuming the veteran indeed opts to play another season, Palmer will look to rebound and lead Arizona back to the playoffs.
Palmer is currently scheduled to earn $17.5 million next season, but at 37 years old, the veteran is said to be coming off the most physically grueling campaign of his career. Not only did Palmer miss one game due to a concussion, but he also dealt with hamstring soreness this season. Furthermore, after enjoying arguably the best year of his career with 35 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 2015, Palmer posted merely 26 scores and threw 14 picks as the Cardinals failed to make the postseason this time around. While several sources reportedly believe Palmer has played his final snap, the former No. 1 overall pick still has a couple more weeks before Arizona's organization hopes to know his plans, making it a wait-and-see situation regarding his 2017 status.
