Gates doesn't practice in minicamp: The official team Web site reports that Chargers TE Antonio Gates was not in every practice during the club's recent minicamp. He worked out on Friday, but not Saturday as he recovers from toe and ankle problems stemming from last season. Gates says his ankle still hurts him. "(Gates) is just going to be on and off a little bit," coach Norv Turner said. "It's the same deal with some of these guys that are continuing on their rehab."

Fantasy Analysis

While many Fantasy pundits will consider Antonio Gates' 2008 season to be a bust, the reality is that he's a stud at a position thin on productive talent, and that alone will make him a desirable Fantasy option. He posted just 704 yards on 60 catches last year (11.7 avg.) with eight touchdowns, his worst totals since his rookie year, all while playing through injuries. Gates should be OK for the 2009 campaign, so any slip he takes in drafts this summer will be somebody's gain. Be that somebody -- consider him a stud No. 1 Fantasy TE well worth a fifth- or sixth-round pick in drafts this summer (almost right after you see at least one of Dallas Clark, Jason Witten and Tony Gonzalez go off draft boards). If you get him past then, it's larceny.

TE Antonio Gates noticed when Kellen Winslow Jr. became the highest-paid tight end in the NFL this week, signing a $36 million deal with Tampa Bay. Gates sees the news as motivation to sign a long-term deal with the Chargers. He isn't talking about holding up the Chargers. He said it's even more important to remain in San Diego than worry about matching anyone else's contract. "I've been a San Diegan for six years now, and I no longer bleed red," Gates said. "I bleed powder blue. So any time you talk about something that's sincere to your heart, any time your soul gets involved in a situation, you know you don't want to leave it. I want to be here. I want to be a part of this. That's my stance." 49//2009
