Fantasy owners must practice patience with Marcus Smith
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer

The selection of Marcus Smith left a lot of people scratching their heads, but the reality is that the Eagles were bowled over with his film and wanted to add another pass rusher to the mix. The plan in Philadelphia is to make him their outside linebacker and have him attack the quarterback, a position Smith himself used to play. Eagles coach Chip Kelly sees "huge upside" in Smith.

Odds are Smith will spend much of this season working in a rotation with Connor Barwin and Trent Cole . But the time will come soon enough where he'll bump one of them off the roster -- potentially Cole since he's older and makes a bunch of money.

Fantasy owners will have to be patient in waiting for Smith to see every-down work, and it won't be until then when he'll have some numbers -- not great numbers -- because outside linebackers typically need a ton of sacks and other stats to supplement their weak (by comparison) tackle totals. Smith should be a good mid-round pick in rookie-only drafts and a late-round choice in dynasty/keeper leagues but he's not worth taking in a standard seasonal format.

Trent Cole aims to build off hot finish
by Larry Hartstein |

Eagles outside linebacker Trent Cole registered all eight of his sacks in the second half of the 2013 season. It took him a while to adjust to the 3-4 scheme.

Cole enters his 10th year with the Eagles looking for his fifth season with double-digit sacks.

“From Day 1, Trent has just played with great effort,” coach Chip Kelly told the Philadelphia Daily News. "Sometimes the numbers didn't show because he didn't have a sack total, or whatever. But the pressure he got from Game 1 to now, through Game 15, sometimes it starts to come. He was so close in a lot of games, but I think what you see out of Trent is that he just gives you that effort, and he just plays so hard.”

Eagles DST scores late to cap great night
by Larry Hartstein |

The Eagles DST got a pick-6 in the fourth quarter when corner Brandon Boykin returned a Jay Cutler interception 54 yards. The touchdown highlighted one of the unit's top performances all year.

Playing with a lead the entire night, Philly held the potent Bears attack to 257 total yards and got five sacks and two takeaways. Linebacker Trent Cole had three sacks, linebacker Mychal Kendricks two. Cornerback Cary Williams recovered Devin Hester's fumble on a first-quarter kickoff return.

The Eagles DST heads to Dallas in Week 17 with momentum.
