Trent Cole agreed to reduce this 2016 base salary from $4.25 million to $2 million, ESPN's Field Yates reports.
After recording career-low marks for both tackles (32) and sacks (three) in his first season with Indianapolis, the 33-year-old Cole had to accept a reduced salary to avoid being released. He'll largely be limited to passing downs next season, and the Indianapolis Colts will probably try to secure a young pass rusher within the first two days of the 2016 NFL Draft.
Trent Cole has been ruled out of Sunday's game against Tennessee due to a concussion, Fox 59 TV in Indianapolis reports.
Cole has been a bust in the first season of a two-year, $16 million contract as he had just three sacks and 32 tackles in 14 games. It's not clear if he'll be ready for the postseason if the Indianapolis Colts miraculously qualify for the playoffs.
Trent Cole had a sack for his only tackle in Sunday's loss to Houston.
Cole has been largely unproductive for the Indianapolis Colts all season, but he's finishing the season on a high note with three sacks in his last four games.
Cole's late-season revival continues as he's had two sacks in the last three games. He played 36 snaps on defense, as he's splitting time at outside linebacker with Jonathan Newsome and Robert Mathis.
Trent Cole had three total tackles and his first sack for the Indianapolis Colts in Sunday's win over Tampa Bay.
Cole has been a bust after signing a two-year, $16 million contract before the season. However, there's always a chance he could rally late in the season.
